odds & ends
Okay, Daniel, you win. Above is a 10-minute video (incredibly well edited, btw) of Tinariwen performing live at Other Music here in NYC. It is, to put it mildly, pretty damned good.
Elsewhere, I updated that best-selling albums of the year hub with the final tally, and the list expanded to 100 titles. A few things [...]
Best Books and Other Stuff, 2007
OK, here’s my two cents on various 2007 bests.
ranked: my best of ‘07
Far be it from me to miss an opportunity to chime in with more lists. I’ve revised my albums list since the last time I posted it, and I also run on (and on and on) about my favorite movies.
movies i liked last year
We rarely, if ever, talk about movies around these parts — probably a serious omission on our part, but we also try to be pretty focused on the music game. Still, there are some tie-ins to eMusic itself worth noting, and so here are some brief thoughts on some films I dug last year.
what I liked last year
17 Dots has been pretty heavy on the aggregation front these past few weeks (it’s that time of year!), but as an astute comment pointed out, there hasn’t been anything from us in terms of what we, as people, actually favored from 2007. And since we’re folks who only need the slightest nudge to get [...]
last stop! ‘07 wrap-up concludes
Today’s the last day of our ‘Best of ‘07′ rollout; find out who won the User Poll (UK, your winners are here). Also, in our final Q&A, I talked to the National about the tough time they had making Boxer. Says frontman Matt Berninger: “It was taking me forever to write lyrics for this thing, [...]
the saga continues
Today on eMusic’s Best of 2007: Numbers 20 - 11 in our User Poll (UK Users, yours is here) and an interview with another 2007 Innovator: Apparat. “My dad was in a band,” he tells Andy Battaglia, “which was a funny thing in East Germany because you were being watched and weren’t allowed to [...]
‘07 countdown: your turn
A quick note to point out the start of our Year-End user poll — 30 - 21 in the US is here, and that same batch in the UK is here. And I’d love to see the “should win/will win” picks on this one.
As for interviews: today we have one with Simone Dinnerstein, whose recording [...]

Also, check out the next installment in our series of interviews with ‘2007 Innovators.’ Today’s subject: Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hutz. Choice quote: “Try to find me another live band that kicks our ass. Try [...]

So, any predictions for our critics’ #1?
iTunes vs. eMusic: the singles
iTunes recently posted their year-end lists for their best-selling titles, as well as their editorial picks. While we will have to wait until next week to look at eMusic’s editorial choices, we thought it might be fun to do a title-by-title comparison of the best-sellers between the two services, with edges being handled out to [...]
more year-end, more opinions
Two more year-end features roll out today: The Year in Reissues by Michaelangelo Matos and Philip Sherburne’s list of the 12 Best Dance Singles of 2007. Both pieces highlight some great records that may have gotten lost in what I’m referring to as “The ‘07 Shuffle.” And with these pieces comes a question for [...]
2007 showdown: iTunes vs. eMusic
So iTunes today posted their year-end lists for their best-selling titles, as well as their editorial picks. While we will have to wait until next week to look at eMusic’s editorial choices, we thought it might be fun to do a title-by-title comparison of the best-sellers between the two services, with edges being handled out [...]
Napoleon IIIrd – In Debt To
I’m not a natural list-maker, so this time of year, with its associated polls and sum-ups, sends my brain reeling. But this year, one artist has helped me out enormously; he’s Napoleon IIIrd and he made my favourite album of 2007.
making a list, chkng it twice
So to keep the list-making going, and as suggested by Daniel, Esq.: what’s your year-end best list of eMu and non-eMu titles combined? I’ll get the ball rolling…
yr year-end mix
So the past couple of days I’ve been working on compiling my annual year-end mix of favorite songs, but I’m convinced that I’m forgetting a ton. If you have already gotten to work compiling yours, please post the tracklisting below! Would love to catch up on some missed great tracks, whether they are on eMusic [...]
