A few weeks ago, we asked you to submit questions for Thao & Mirah for an interview we’d be conducting with them via Twitter. Many of you used the opportunity to try to ask them out. Classy! How come you didn’t try that with My Morning Jacket? Most of you, though, responded with actual questions. The answers to which you can find below the jump!
Fan @Roodeeee: how has it been playing with one another? Do you all get along well and enjoy the vibes while playing together at shows?
Mirah: Fun fun times. Sweaty. Educational.
Thao: We do get along quite well, and we do both love vibraphones.
@Marysometimes asks: so, now that you’ve collaborated with each other, who would be one other artist you’d each like to work with?
Mirah: Cyndi Lauper! Janelle Monae! Leonard Cohen!
Thao: Lucinda Williams, I want Lorrie Moore to make a film so I can score it.
@soundofthings writes: My son asked a great question: why do people listen to sad music when they are sad?
Mirah: So they don’t feel alone in sadness. Everybody gets sad sometimes and music can be a beautiful way to communicate about that and all other human conditions as well, joy, love, fear, desire. We have so much in us.
Thao: Because when people are sad they sometimes want to feel sadder and sadder, until they are done with it. It’s like if you open a coke, you have to drink it till it’s gone, or else it goes flat. And if you open it, you might as well finish it but don’t drink coke, it’s bad for you.
Fan @kjjohns5 asks: Was I or was I not the biggest fan you met during your Thao and Mirah Tour? Khris from Tampa!
Thao: KHRIS YES OF COURSE YOU WERE no contest. We still want to reimburse you for gas.
Fan Martin Blasick wants to know: Is there a 2nd album in the works? Or is this a one-time thing?
Mirah: You mean was it just a fling or is it a long-term commitment? I have no plans to never work with Thao again.
@Marysometimes asks: Dear Thao & Mirah: which T+M song is your favorite to play live?
Mirah: Favorite song to play: Little Cup! I also love to play TEETH, to show off my playground hand clap skills.
Thao: Littler Cup! I also love playing rubies and rocks because I get to play the timbales with tiny sticks.
Fan @StaggerThrew7 asks: What where you both like as children? Were you a dreamer? Did you like to color? What kinds of things did you do that you still find yourself doing today? (if any)
Mirah: Small, focused, fastidious, gregarious, happy. Yes. Yes. Dreaming.
Thao: I jumped up and down on all of our furniture repeatedly, every day. Yes I dreamt of lobsters snapping at me. I didn’t color much because I didn’t want to dull the crayons. I loved crayons. Those recurring lobster dreams were really scary. I’m getting triggered.
From fan @CortJstr: Thao, do you ever go back to the Potbelly where you first started playing?
Thao: Don’t go to Potbelly’s anymore, mostly because I don’t eat that much wheat. But maybe I will have my next birthday there
From @livinthedre4m: What is Mirah’s personal favorite song she has done? I’m sketching a “Mirah” half sleeve tattoo and want to include it!
Mirah: Impossible question to answer! I feel really proud of Hallelujah, Cold Cold Water was a wild fun adventure ride. In the studio, The Garden was quick and dirty and sometimes that’s the best. Just make sure to put some clothes on me ok!?
Last question from @jonvoss Thao + Mirah: if you could live in another time other than now, what (& where) would it be?
Mirah: The future perfect. Now is interesting, and pretty good, except for all the problems, but we’ve always had those.
Thao: I’d go back to the womb 4 the controlled climate+steady food supply + because the beginning of look who’s talking is amazing. Doesn’t matter whose womb! Sorry mom! But really! I don’t care!
