fund: film about african music
Well, this looks incredible. Frank Gossner, who runs both the amazing blog Voodoo Funk as well as my favorite DJ night in New York City, bar none, is a record fanatic, focusing on rare, vital, exuberant music from Africa. His blog is an absolute treasure trove, and the care and energy he dedicates to its curation is humbling. He’s also an intercontinental crate-digger, taking trips to Gana and Benin and Togo to dig up records that would otherwise vanish completely into the ether. It’s an incredible pursuit, and he’s now the subject of a documentary, Take Me Away Fast.
…sort of. The documentary needs funding to be completed (specifically: color correction, sound mixing, securing music rights, tracking down archival footage of old music performances, and website construction), and the director, Leigh Iacobucci, has set up a project on Kickstarter to make it happen. The project closes on Monday, but they’re still just shy of their goal. And since I know eMusic members tend to love African music as much as I do, this seemed like a good place to shout out this worthy project. Pitch in before time runs out!

just saw this. i’ll look to contribute.
and i’ll use this space to reiterate my hope that emusic gets more of the catalogues of, say, analog africa and honest jon’s (i assume sublime frequencies is a bridge-too-far). i realize that securing the digital rights to the music on these catalogues can be incredibly complex and problemmatic.
