We’ve all had them: that moment, unexpected, unannounced, when your heart leaps out of your chest, your legs go numb and you find yourself struggling to speak. For some of us, it happens when we’re young — for others, when we’re much older. But one thing is certain: you never forget the first rock star you fell in love with. In honor of Valentine’s Day, we at eMusic asked some of our favorite artists to tell us about their first Rock Star Crush. The results range from the moving — Andrew Kenny of American Analog Set and the Wooden Birds‘ tribute to Stereolab’s Mary Hansen — to the bizarre — Man…Or Astro-Man?, naturally — to the vaguely profane — Dillinger Escape Plan win the TMI Award this time out.

Check out all the musical crushes here!

We’ve also asked you to share your musical crushes on our Facebook page. Here’s what you had to say:

“David Bowie! I grew up watching him over and over in Labyrinth (which I’ve owned in pretty much every format since its release — got it on Blu-Ray for Christmas). I still love that man and everything he does!”

“Simultaneously Kate Bush and Chrissie Hynde – the angel and the tough girl.”

“Susannah Hoffs. A bambi-eyed goddess wielding a guitar – what’s not to love?”

“Tom Petty. The surly bad-boy look! The leather jacket! The blond hair falling in his face! *floating hearts above head*”

“My pre-adolescent soul was rocked by seeing a picture of Suzi Quatro in leather pants in my big brother’s Creem magazine. Still never bought any of her records (sorry, Suzi).”

“As a young lad, I used to go through my dads’ record collection all the time. When I found his copy of Tom Waits’ “Small Change”, I was in looooooove (and little did I know that woman on the cover was Cassandra Peterson – more commonly known as ELVIRA!)”

My first rockstar crush was on George Michael. I remember watching the “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” video, thinking how cool it would be to have a boyfriend with whom I could share earrings. My ears were as yet unpierced.

I am ashamed to share my two crushes: Natalie Merchant and Michael Stipe. I was totally that kid. Needless to say, this blew my 18 year-old mind.

My first, uhm, “rock star” crush: Paula Abdul. Serious crush, but one that was tied up hopelessly/inextricably with my crush on my friend’s older sister, who played Forever Your Girl a lot and danced around and sang to it. Hard to know, really, who it was I really had the crush on. But let me just say that the “Rush, Rush” video was a pretty epic moment.

    First: Ronnie Spector
    Most recent: Jenny Lewis
Others I can recall: Sara Lee and Tina Weymouth, world’s sexiest bass players.
