coming soon…
06Jan10

So, things have been awfully quiet around these parts lately, no? Maybe a little too quiet? Well, far be it from us to tip our hands. Let’s just say, faithful readers of 17 Dots, that if I were you, I’d hang on to my January downloads for at least the next couple of weeks…

Hints, plz?
I think some people are wise to the (re)acquisition of one label, if we’re guessing right. I’m hoping you’ve got something else up your sleeve, too.
(Already used all but 4 January DLs, anyway).
We’ve got more up our sleeve than the one currently being guessed at…
Does this apply outside of the US? I’d hate to hang onto my UK Jan downloads only to be disappointed.
Ack, sorry – it is for the US only at present.
i have 45 i’ve sat on that i have to use by 1/20. make it happen, guys!
though i just noticed spoon and eels are listed right on time. excited about those and very curious about the neko case and nick cave “january” listings.
new majors, right? you don’t have to answer.
another vanilla ice re-record?
I am sitting on 18 until until the 15th until I get my 35 monthly so I think I am good.
Is Taylor Swift coming back?
You should be good by the 15th.
Hm.
I’m sold. I just picked up three booster-packs in anticipation.
Regarding the US only nature of this annnouncement, are there any attempts being made to make this content available outside the US….we hear all the time about “we’re trying” but nothing changes. And of course being an Australian subscriber, I’m grandfathered in as a member, but since you’re not taking any new members from outside the US/UK/EU/Canada, I assume there are no efforts being made at all for members outside of those regions?
If this is the case, forgive me for the sour taste all these “Aren’t we great, look what we’ve got coming” messages leave……
Cerebus, sadly it is not the fault of eMusic, but who ever is the distributor of the music you want out there. for instance something in the U.S. might be distributed by Staubgold / Finetunes who does wish to do business with eMusic while in Aus. it might have been picked up by someone else who does not want emusic.au to have it, or may not have any distributor in Aus (which then I believe falls upon import laws or copyright laws or something).
Your best bet is to go to a record store, find out who distributes the record/artist/music you want on eMusic and let them know how important it is that you see it on eMusic.
When they say “we’re trying” it really does mean they are trying they are petitioning whom ever it is distributed by in each region, and are often rebuffed with, “well there aren’t any subscribers out here who want that, we wouldn’t get enough clicks”
Cerebrus: believe me, I completely understand. All I can say on our behalf, without getting too much into it, is that efforts to acquire specific content outside the US are, indeed, ongoing, and we’re not giving up. It just tends to be a bit trickier for lots of dull legal reasons.
That issue just about this good topic seems to be superior! Hence students not should accomplish the thesis writing and thesis title by their own efforts, they should use your help.
Well not wishing derail the thread or to be overly cynical Joe but eMusic now restricts access entirely to people outside US, UK, EU and Canada ie, you cannot even join up. And you could cut off the access of existing subscribers like me immediately if you wanted.
This indicates strongly the company’s business focus and so you’ll forgive us outside those regions not believing much legwork is going on on our behalf. Why would eMusic put any effort into getting content for Australia when they’re not going to ever get any new subscribers here? I would be thrilled to be corrected on that. Working hard for UK/EU/Canada regions, sure. For regions you’ve already cut off? I’m sceptical.
I’m not particularly bothered by it though personally, I’ve got about 3000 albums saved for later to get through! I sincerely hope my US comrades get everything they are hoping for.
” I sincerely hope my US comrades get everything they are hoping for.”
I am hoping for Color Me Badd!
Color me intrigued! I can’t wait to see what shows up!
It would be nice to get a date rather than a vague “You should be good by the 15th” reference. Am I being picky? Sure. I just like to plan things out though. My guess is that this goes down on the 12th (Tuesday).
Are we going to get the Electric Cambodia compilation? Nick Cave and Tom Waits are great and all, but that’s the one I’m really looking forward to.
Tom – I was just talking about this comp this morning! I just got the promo – let me see what I can find out.
It’s coming out 1/12 on a label called Minky, about which I can’t find a whole lot. Not sure a) who handles their digital distro and b) if this is going to be a licensing issue since it’s a comp. As soon as I hear anything, I’ll let you know.
Electric Cambodia sounds interesting in name alone. It looks like my refresh date is coming around the 14th. I just bought a 50 track Booster Pack but used it up rather quickly.
And since this has been a discussion elsewhere, I should clarify: while the image above is, indeed, a painting of Pandora looking into her box, that is not in any way any kind of clue. We were literally just Googling for pictures of someone peeking into a box and found this. I foolishly said, “no one is going to know this is Pandora!” You guys, your detective work impresses me every time!!
“You guys, your detective work impresses me every time!!”
haha, yours too. I think I know what outside forum you’ve been visiting.
Heh, I knew I was wrong!
Craig
It’s impressive — and frustrating! — that in this era of instant access to information, eMusic does a remarkably good job of keeping things quiet. That is: I can’t find anything on the internet that hints at the label (or labels) soon to arrive here.
Having said that, “new majors, right? you don’t have to answer.” Tip of the hat to Duggie, upthread.
So it’s looking like we will be getting Electric Cambodia, just not on street. I will keep you posted.
Breath is officially bated…
I’m a US subscriber and have been for sometime, but I was originally in the UK. Having been involved in the music biz for a little bit I’m all too familiar with some of the legal wrangling that goes into getting music around the world. Everyone may know all the differences, beats me, but there are so many different ways different parts of the world treats these things. For example, in the EU you have to pay all kinds of mechanicals than in the US. So, without new business models or changes to existing business models or contracts, it can be really expensive to sell the music. Not counting that music can be distributed by one org in the US, different org in the EU, different in AU, different in Canada, etc.
And, probably the rest of the world is more legal licensing issues. If you have too many lawyers in a room look what happens! Emusic would probably love to sell to everyone, but sometimes it’s too expensive and takes months and years to get the contracts and licenses in place.
It’s never as easy as what it seems. Just my 2 cents.
That Electric Cambodia thing sounds interesting:

Rykodisc? Yeah I now that’s not it.
Meanwhile, NPR is streaming the new SPOON album. Essential weekend listening:

So it’s looking like we will be getting Electric Cambodia, just not on street. I will keep you posted.
Excellent! I think. What does “not on street” mean?
Anyway, thanks for checking!
oy, sorry, Tom, I slipped into jargon there for a second – it means ‘not on release date.’
jSams – thanks for getting into that! much appreciated.
Gotcha. Thanks!
For some reason, this Electric Cambodia album reminds me a bit of the Fallout 3 soundtrack. I’m sure they are all melodies that are inherently pleasing but have been forgotten completely.
“Breath is officially bated…”

What about vampire weekend?

Wow.
I can handle downloading The Cure albums (expanded editions) for 12 credits,
The Replacements… =)
Geez. Not even through the first third of stuff that’s newly uploaded.
Can I trade in some iTunes gift cards for some boosters here?
Sorry, aber das bezweifel ich ganz stark…Baer
