Gilbert is one of those few musicians that deserve the hype and live up to it. His intelligence and down to earth nature are quite promising for the NY Phil and their future. And the interview itself is fascinating; I wish it was longer and got Gilbert's reaction to even more pieces (I love reading his take on rock and jazz). One of the cool things I see is that he can "hear the score," i.e., Gilbert can open a sheet of written music and hear -- without the music actually being played -- what the piece sounds like. That's an amazing and rare talent. I enjoyed all the samples linked in the interview.
