eMusic Hidden Treasures: Jazz and Classical
Today’s edition of our weeklong eMusic Hidden Treasures is a cross-section of fascinating jazz and classical records that, for any number of reasons, hide in plain sight. Picking a “Hidden Treasure” in the jazz and classical section is a different sort of task than it is with indie records — is it unknown because it’s covering an obscure corner of the repertory (as is the case with the recording of stride blues pianist James P. Johnson’s symphonic works) or because it’s an old chestnut done up in an unorthodox style (like Jordi Savall’s bracing take on Beethoven’s Eroica?) Either way, I think we settled on a list of record that pretty much hits the only real target for a list like this — “unjustly ignored.” Take a look!

17Dots.comPugParty.comJayson what a conincidence you wrote this article on the day that this comes to eMusic
http://www.emusic.com/album/The-Elysian-Quartet-Gabriel-Prokofiev-String-Quartet-No-2-MP3-Download/11678831.html
and the “(G Prokofiev Non House Remix)” definitly is NOT house music
also Alarm will sound’s Aphex Twin Album is also Classical for the electronic. . . or electronic for the classical. . . and thus is jazz/fusion
so I think it’s a hidden classical treasure
Wow, I have four of those albums already. The Jordi Savall is a wonderful, wonderful recording of “Eroica” to listen to if you feel in any way bored with the work. I also have the Joe Mooney and Ray Barretto albums, both faves of mine, and the James P. Johnson album, which is a must for those who like to think about an alternate history of classical music in which it embraced jazz instead of demeaning it. All of the albums I don’t have on that list look interesting, too. As someone who comes to eMusic mostly for jazz, classical, and hip-hop, this is a super-nice list.
Hey, just found this here after a quick yahoo search. Fine site you have here! Keep it up!
