pfork festival: video wrap up
(flamgirlant and p-clark weigh in)
So this year, Jayson & I snapped some quick videos of the Pitchfork Festival — we talked to a few bands and shot some performance footage (we also interviewed Flamgirlant and Ptolemyclark, which you can watch above). We thought we’d close out our Pitchfork Fest coverage by sharing some of those videos with you. The clips are short, somewhat intentionally.
One caveat: the sound on these, admittedly, is rough — this was our first video experiment, and clearly we have some fine-tuning to do!
Watch after the jump!
The Flaming Lips perform “Fight Test.” Slowly.
I interview Scott from Frightened Rabbit
Frightened Rabbit performs “Good Arms Vs. Bad” (fragment)
Jayson interviews Women. I should have instead written “Jayson hits on Women.” Sigh. Puns.
Damian from Fucked Up staggers around with a beach ball on his head (fragment. amazing.)
I interview Bowerbirds
The Mae Shi cover the audience with a parachute
Japandroids perform (fragment)

Actually, that Flaming Lips is more like the last five seconds of “Fight Test” before they play a new, slightly kraut-rocky song that sounds like it is probably called “The Difference Between Us.” Also: it is nearly unwatchably trembly. My bad.
How could we have just come from Japandroids, discussed it, and then fail to mention it on camera? Also that the Beirut show was incredible (and I’m not even a very big fan of them). And I also should mention that my “eh” review of the Women set may have had something to do with the absence of Matthew Flegel’s beard.
Ha! We’re silly! It’s funny though – p-clark noted later that we were pretty chatty until Joe turned the camera on us. In our defense, it was nearing evening of Sunday and we were waiting for our second wind to kick in. Probably had something to do with the gin and vodka we indulged in the night before. Oh and I have to note that after that interview, we spotted The Decidedly Not-Dead Girl. It was a bonding moment, even if we couldn’t get Jayson to go poke her with a stick.
That Frightened Rabbit interview is proof that that sort of thing should be left to you all. If that would’ve been me, I would’ve started off with something like a gush of absolute love for him and the band followed by a totally inappropriate manhandling. *sigh* Scott is dreamy.
I haven’t had a chance to chime in on the other Pitchfork threads, but I did do a little bit of blogging with some pictures of a handful of bands we saw. Can take a peek here. Next year I’ll be asking boys if I can take pics of their beards…
For the record: it was awesome meeting you guys!! p-clark is a great festival date, all. And Joe is fun to watch when he gets excited. Now now, don’t go getting the wrong idea; I can’t help it if the things I type come out naughty. All of the exclamation points he writes with are legit folks – he talks with them too! We only caught up with Jayson once – I think he was enjoying his VIP status too much to mingle with the huddled masses. Joe at least was out and about reminding us of his VIP status: “I’m heading to the VIP bathrooms – maybe catch you at Japandroids” or “I’m going to go get another free VIP beer” or “We have good food over in the VIP section too”. ;-P
All in all, a great festival. Let’s do it again next year!!
“We only caught up with Jayson once – I think he was enjoying his VIP status too much to mingle with the huddled masses.”
ooooouch!!!!! It’s not true..I watched a ton of shows from the audience ( or with “the normies,” as I like to call them.) I was hard to pin down, it’s true…next time!
Nicely put, flamgirlant. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go have a VIP bagel!
I caught Joe at Japandroids. Well, technically I caught him filming from my decidedly non-VIP vantage point.
Alright Jayson, I’ll give you a pass this time. Mostly ‘cuz I had no clue what you looked like until we met. And you don’t sport a beard – I could’ve been standing right next to you earlier and never even known it. And maybe Joe was just trying to impress p-clark and I with both his beard AND VIP status…
WJPurdy – we did see a dude in a funky hat getting beer tickets around the B stage… maybe even right around the Japandroids time. I believe it was sorta tie-dyed. If remember correctly, the guy was sporting a goatee. Was that you? We were camped out on a blanket by the tree right near there.
(thanks for fixing my links guys!)
Had I been there, I would have had my finger way up my nose (for flamgirlant). And I would have been rocking my beard (for ptolemyclark). And I would have NOT been wearing capri pants (because that’s just not how I hang). Glad to see that a good time was had by all.
wait, wait Cap’n – beard and no capris for p-clark? and I get the finger in the nose. this doesn’t sound fair. I understand I don’t have the bits that work for you, but you can’t hold that against me. I was born this way.
Flam, my hat on Sunday was an orange Yuengling cap (chosen for maximum visibility to my group of khaki, olive, and neutral color-wearing friends). And I have a goatee, but one that you’d have to see in the correct light to notice (normally, I look like I might have been drinking chocolate milk rather sloppily). For the Japandroids set, I made my way between the soundboard and the big tree, then about 20 feet closer to the stage.
If you saw a GROVERFIELD t-shirt (depicting the Sesame Street monster terrorizing a cityscape), then you saw me. I haven’t worn anything tie-dyed in 20 years. Now that I’ve seen video footage of you and p-clark, I’ll know what to look for next year!
I win.
Yes, PC… you win.
[sigh]
