Nite Jewel — “Lover”
My music listening has been split between three artists the past month: the Neil Young Archives set (incredible; find the Riverboat performance of “Expecting to Fly” ASAP), Let’s Wrestle’s new one, coming next week (awesome awesome awesome); and Nite Jewel’s “Lover,” from her Good Evening record. The album kinda blows, but “Lover,” the album’s closer, is spectacular, an echo of the Motels (trainspotted by my gf Kali) and this beautiful, reverbed thing that’s nothing but nonstop ’80s melancholy and oodles of kisses. Unfortunately the video — embedded above — sucks (watching it for the first time this morning worrying that it might ruin the song for me; it came close) so just listen but don’t watch. And then cherrypick from the album itself.
PS: Side note on Nite Jewel. Joe saw her — it is just one woman — perform at Other Music earlier this year and compared it to the Deep House Dish performances on SNL. If you’re a regular SNL watcher, you understand exactly what he means. Still, this song is perfecto.

I’d say that Nite Jewel has several great songs on that album. “Artificial Intelligence” and the previously released Italians Do It Better 12″ “What Did He Say” are certainly worthy of downloads. But I think I agree that the album kind of drags. She may be a better singles artist. I couldn’t stop listening to “Artificial Intelligence” last year after I got it off a blog – maybe Gorilla Vs Bear? don’t remember now.
Also, Nite Jewel is a duo now from what I have seen with their shows with Glass Candy lately from YouTube. I missed them when they came through my neck of the woods last time. I don’t figure they are exactly a stellar live act, but Glass Candy surprised me.
“WHAT DID HE SAY”!!! For real.
i don’t get joe’s SNL joke, but i guess i’ll need to look out for deep house dish skits, cos i think that nite jewel record is solid, with only one or two serious mis-steps. i guess i can see why it is a turn off, though. personally, i have no problem with underwater freestyle.
maybe you also just dislike her songwriting? “lover” is a roxy music song.
Excited by the new Let’s Wrestle. Is it a single or album (please be the later)?
heya yancey boi
Nite Jewel – that’s a real nice catch!
The video works fine for me though… I’ll take the album the hear on my way to the swimming pool today. Inspiration is so hard to find the last couple of weeks as we became so tight in playing and recording whole of the time.
Became a big fan of the beatles suddenly… well that’s a real discomfort!
eMus reamains the play to breath in…
it’s good to be back home
TROY
Since there was no NA post this week…
Any word on where some of the newest releases are from labels like Preservation, Digitalis, Miasmah, as well as William Basinski’s latest outings are?
Nite Jewel is a sweet girl…her talents will develop.
I love the “bro-mance” on these music blogs. Sausage party anyone?
Ha, Alex P… good call. I was just about to say that she reminds me more of Avalon-era Bryan Ferry than the Motels. But is it really a Roxy Music cover? I don’t know it…
Lover is a rare track by Roxy Music that can be found on the Miami Vice II soundtrack.
Easy to miss those non Jan Hammer tracks on a Miami Vice soundtrack
Hey, thanks a lot, Yancey: “Don’t look, don’t look, it’s horrendous…” How could I help myself? I had to watch, and…
Oh my god.
Maybe it’s better with 3-D glasses?
Anyway, it’s nice to have you back.
