I don’t know how it took me almost two weeks to stumble across this but, man, am I glad I did. In this awesomely artless video, Frightened Rabbit’s Scott Hutchison takes a breathless spin through Neutral Milk Hotel’s awesome and underrated “Song Against Sex.” FRabbit have their own “song against sex,” of course, and its name is “Keep Yourself Warm.” The way Hutchison handles this one, though, makes me think they should consider adding it to their live repertoire.

Have you seen this site Joe?

    Black Cab Sessions

Pakman posted about it the other day. Pretty cool, I really like The National one. I like the St. Vincent one too, but wished she would have done something more acoustic as the electric guitar kind of drowns her out in the cab.

I still haven’t gotten into Frightened Rabbit, but I did eventually become a Neutral Milk Hotel convert. I just need to listen to this in the right month I think.

    The cover, is lovely.

Bryan, I must second your suggestion on Blackcab, they’re awesome I saw seasick steve in one and went out and download some of his tracks

I can’t get into the Black Cab Sessions that much. It seems too limiting and the performances I’ve seen haven’t been all that great. I’ll check out your recommendations though Bryan as I do like The National.

I prefer the original and the best Take Away Shows – http://www.blogotheque.net/-Concerts-a-emporter-?lang=en – there are some really nice public interactions and as a result some amazing performances. Tape n’ Tapes, Of Montreal and Elvis Perkins come to mind. Bryan, The National are in there too!

Frightened Rabbit is one of the very few recent bands that I can play the hell out of and not tire of. They also have a twitter if ya want to stalk them: http://twitter.com/FRabbits. They’re currently in the studio.

Same! I had to take a break from Midnight Organ Fight for a while, but I’m really looking forward to the new record!

Oh, also: I got an advance of the Clean record yesterday! Sounding great to me so far. But what’s sounding even better is the Lightning Dust record, which is the side project of Amber Webber and Josh Wells from Black Mountain. Awesome spooky folk, like Neko Case trapped in an Edward Gorey painting (how’s that for some rock-critting?) It’s out August 4 on Jagjaguwar and will be well worth the wait!!

Oh how I love Frightened Rabbit. Their live shows are so flipping fantastic. How great would it be if they played this tune at P4k?

  8. 8 joe

Hey, will you be there again, flamgirlant? I think we all will, too!

  9. 9 ptolemyclark

You guys are going to be there?! I’ll be tagging along with flamgirlant…I’ll be the one without the boobs.

  10. 10 joe

I think we’re gonna be there! I’ll be the one with the boobs. By which I mean: Jayson and Yancey.

    ZING!

I’ve had that anthology by The Clean on my SFL list forever. Worth downloading, I suppose?

    Black Mountain has about 10 side-projects. They’re like a mini-Broken Social Scene.

Seriously. This one is really good — I never really got into Pink Mountaintops, but I really like Amber’s voice, and she does 90% of the singing on this.

I’m in promo heaven today — I finally have a few free moments to go through stuff that’s been piling up, and there are some real gems in here. Among them a new EP from the group Yarn, Foreign Born (out on Secretly Canadian on 6/24 — kinda Walkmen-esque), and this really awesome album by a group called Brian Bonz & the Dot Hongs (which, if course, I mis-read as the “hot dongs.”) Going to try to see if we’re getting it on the site, because I think people would dig this. A lot.

“I’m in promo heaven today . . . there are some real gems in here.”

An Event-Horizon type post (i.e., stuff to look forward to in the short-term future) would be welcome, BTW (by me, at least).

  15. 15 joe

Yeah, I’m trying to figure out which we’ll be getting and which we won’t be getting.

  16. 16 joe

I can hear flamgirl liking the Yarn EP a lot — we have some Yarn records on the site, but I don’t know if it’s the same Yarn.

  17. 17 flamgirlant

Yup, I’ll be pitchforking it again this year. Doesn’t look like I’ll be there Friday, but def Sat and Sun. We all should totally try and hook up this year – it’d be swell to meet you all. Maybe at the Pains show? Let’s make this happen!! (most excellent burn Joe).

I’ll check out the Yarn EP, but you should give Black Lipstick a listen. Pretty sure that same dude and chick from Pink Mountaintops are in there (at least it sounds like it). I really dig them (and dig them more than Black Mountain), but having a bit of a hard time getting into Pink Mountaintops. Start with Converted Thieves – my fave. Can also go to my blog here to check out Voodoo Economics from that album: http://flamgirlant.tumblr.com/post/113259677/voodooeconomics

Let’s make it work. My beard & I will be in full effect.

I’ll check out Black Lipstick for sure — I kept getting them confused with the Black Lips, who I know I don’t like. Thanks for the tip!

  19. 19 flamgirlant

oh you say that like you don’t know p-clark and I swoon over beards… wonder what one in full effect would do to us!

  20. 20 joe

“oh you say that like you don’t know p-clark and I swoon over beards”

Ah, see, that’s where you’re wrong… I knew full well you both did! ;-)

  21. 21 flamgirlant

    tease!

I’m definitely looking forward to the Lightning Dust release. Never been a big fan of Black Mountain, nor Pink Mountaintops…until recently (on the latter, anyway). “Outside Love” is firmly cemented into my top three albums of the year so far. I’m a sucker for the rustic gospel-esque sound, and PMt has got that nailed (seriously, listen to “And I Thank You” start to finish and tell me you don’t get huggy chills by the end).

I like blogs like this one, I am sure you put an effort on it to keep it up. Nice post, grazie mille .
