road trippin’

Ok, so clearly the time for doombient is over. I’m about to embark on a bit of a road trip, and the forecast is SUNNY. Proto-summer, in Joe-speak. Obviously a summer’s day road trip jam is much different than a winter one (or even a night drive), but here are some things on the top of my mind for soundtracking “being blinded by the sun staring out a van window.”

The Lemonheads!
Breezy and light and catchy and general awesome and easy. The last six months or so has been a HUGE Lemonheads kick for me in general, but now today it’s a mega-crave.

The Raucous Axis (garage rock/melodic punk/powerpop):
Reigning Sound, the Dirtbombs, Nobunny, Jay Reatard, the Hyped2Death comps, The Undertones, Let’s Wrestle, Nodzzz, the Hunches. Ad infinitum. I recently bought a little iPod shuffle thing and it’s loaded all up with my “PUNKPOP JAMZ” playlist. Nonstop hits.

Rap! Big, brassy rap!
Rick Ross, The Recession, T.I., various random things scoured from NahRight. Sunshine = rappers who rap slowly.

Of course at night, I’ll probably just listen to Burial on repeat. But that’s a different story.

Happy trails, Alex. Scoop Emmy winners like Kitty litter.

Good “road-trip” discs: (a) the Dazed & Confused Soundtrack (http://www.amazon.com/Dazed-Confused-1993-Various-Artists/dp/B000002L1V) (n.1); (b) Super Furry Animal’s new disc, Dark Days/Light Years (http://www.emusic.com/album/Super-Furry-Animals-Dark-Days-Light-Years-MP3-Download/11421114.html); and (c) The Roots of Chicha (http://www.emusic.com/album/Various-Artists-The-Roots-of-Chicha-MP3-Download/11098005.html).

I noticed from my local concert calendar that your road trip will take you through Rochester – so you might want some back up cold-n-cloudy music. It’s warm and sunny today; but you just never can tell with Rochester.

I don’t know where to put this, but…

What happened to The Rural Alberta Advantage’s album? It seems to have disappeared from the site. Did they get signed by a major who demanded that their album be taken down?

@Neil – RAA’s Twitter read “big big raa news tba here sooooo soon. like zomg big (at least in our world)” from April 11. Kinda cryptic, but they’re hinting pretty much exactly like they hinted back right before the big Select announcement came.
