big youth!
26Feb09
It’s been pointed out elsewhere, but we got a healthy stash of Big Youth records on the site today. I can be a bit ambivalent about Big Youth — a lot of his stuff is just toasting on top of long dubs, and that doesn’t do a lot for me (sacrilege, I know!), but a few of the titles that came in today skew more melodic. To wit:
Hit the Road Jack: If nothing else, check out the title track — an amazing take on a timeless classic.
Chanting Dread Inna Fine Style: More scratchy, classic one-drop reggae.
Go for it!

For anyone: If I have the Blood & Fire three-disc set (Universal Dread: 1973 — 1979), do I need anything else? (linked below). I like some of it a lot, but I can take it or leave it.

(I just glanced at the sidebar. This is my 400th post in the comment section? Oy vey).
Danie – you might not like remixed stuff, but if you do try some of Big Youth’s work with Twilight Circus or the Select Cuts from Blood and Fire 3 albums on emusic if you do. I agree though that the release you highlight captures much of his great stuff.
A lot is probably redundant with the three volume set, but some of these new albums are post 79 – so those might be worth checking.
I was happy to see these new ones b/c I always wanted to try Big Youth but was scared of the size of the three volume set. I also tend to like albums more than collections.
Congratulations on your 400 comments!
and Congrats to Nergal/MiDoJo on having two names up! (Better switch back to MiDoJo soon though; it would be a shame to let it slip off.)
@Adamm: can’t sold the name to my former partner in studio so I had to shed as many on my online personas with that name as I could. but combined I haz (cheeseburger?) only 255 I must post more (inanity) and catch up with Daniel (alien) ESQ LOL
maybe i should start using it.
eeek you’ll get me sued for sure LOLL
I feel like the Blood & Fire stuff is enough Big Youth for me too, though there is certainly some good stuff on there.
