my spring mix
It’s wishful thinking, I realize, but the other day I decided it was time to make my first spring playlist, an annual rite I always seem to go through when my listening habits will start seasonally shifting. Of course I love all the songs on my mix — that’s why they’re on it in the first place! — and so I thought I’d share. If you have a recent mix that yr proud of, please please please post it in the comments. Really looking for new stuff to listen to (too many old faves on my mix). Anyhoo, here goes:
01 Cotton Jones, “Up a Tree”
02 Your Twenties, “Won’t You Be Kind?”
03 The Rakes, “Little Superstitions”
04 Dion, “Baby Let’s Stick Together”
05 Alexis Taylor, “I’m Not a Robber”
06 Neil Young, “Birds”
07 The Love Story, “Passerby” (MySpace)
08 Glasser, “Glad”
09 Built to Spill, “Car”
10 Neil Young, “Unknown Legend”
11 Fever Ray, “Triangle Walks”
12 Retro Stefson, “Papa Paulo III”
13 John Maus, “Do Your Best”
14 Crystal Stilts, “Crippled Croon”
15 Let’s Wrestle, “I’m in Fighting Mode”
16 Cotton Jones, “Some Strange Rain”

cotton jones = really cool cowboy songs, your twenties sounds like the rakes and both sound like really good british indie. dion is perfect. alexis taylor is my favorite record of the past three or four months. i listen to it all the time. neil young is the best of course, and two of my faves of his are on here. the love story are a new brooklyn band — friends with she keeps bees — and that one song (hear it on the myspace link) is spectacular but too short. glasser is on the selects comp, built to spill is perfect, fever ray is the knife and spooky and gorgeous, retro stefson is icelandic and rad, john maus is this really creepy booming-voiced thing, the stilts are our boys forever, let’s wrestle are our other boys forever and this final cotton jones song sounds like bradford cox and jeff tweedy collaborating. phew!
My most recent mix is called “Everything’s Alright. Yes, Everything’s Fine (or, The Rise and Fall of the Religious Tribes of Rural America)”. Nearly all the tracks are on Emu.

Mixtapes are one of my most favorite things. My latest is called Mixtape 53. Actually, I sent a copy of it off to you guys at eMusic. I made good on my threat to send you guys a naughty VD card and included a copy of the mix. So you got one floating around there somewhere. Super music nerdy, I know, but I’m a super music nerd.
Anywho, most tracks are available on eMusic:

oh and Yancey, take a listen to Cotton Jones’s “Had Not A Body”. It is (arguably) a Perfect Song.
i want to hear it and can’t find it! pls help!
You know, I started up a new blog not too long ago and the last song I posted was “Had Not A Body”. Give it a listen (or 3 – it’s one of those songs that I need to hear more than once). http://flamgirlant.tumblr.com/
So anyway, I’m a week late because I’m a retard and agonize over stuff like this. Also because I’m a retard, I insist on staying under 74 minutes, the original capacity of a CD. Gotta have rules, man. Like a sonnet. Or a filthy limerick.
I also realized that spring means a retreat from irony and the edge as I step, blinking, barely, into the light. Nothing clever or overly obscure. No Black Saint. The presence of Collective Soul is enough to forever destroy my indie cred…
…except that ALL of my list is at emu, where I’ve bought ALL my music since 2006. Spending money elsewhere? What the FOOK?!
Yancey, I stole another idea from you: opening and closing with the same artist — definitely a rule I’m adding to the 74-minute/emu-only axis.
Crooked Fingers – Twilight Creeps
Jay Farrar – 6 String Belief
Prints – Fire Days
Chris Letcher – Deep Frieze
The Free Design – Make the Madness Stop
Shack – Butterfly
Bruce Cockburn – Creation Dream
The Three 4 Tens – Everyday
Ultra Vivid Scene – Staring at the Sun
Califone – The Orchids
Williams – Glitch Cowboy Local 16044
The Fireman – Sing the Changes
Collective Soul – Home
Hatcham Social – So So Happy Making
Teenage Fanclub – It’s All in My Head
Bill Lloyd – Back to Even
And You Will Know Us, etc. – Festival Thyme
Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians – Winchester
Starling Electric – To Flunker With Love
Crooked Fingers – Under Pressure
There you go. 74 minutes. Sweet in its own pathetic way.
