na: warp!

19Feb09

2009 marks Warp Records’ 20th year in business — a staggering achievement for anyone, and one all the more impressive considering the fickle taste of electronic music fans. But for Warp, they haven’t just adapted to the past two decades’ worth of faddish shifts and genre re-inventions: in many cases, they have led them. Certainly IDM would be nowhere without Warp, and everything from house to techno to ambient would be much poorer without its catalogue.

Today we are thrilled to unveil the first installment of Warp on eMusic. It’s starting small and it’s starting from the beginning, but there are so many amazing records here already. New to Warp? No worries! We’ve had some of the best electronic music writers — including, in a comeback appearance, Mr. Todd Burns! — write about their favorites from the catalogue. You can find those in our essentials hub.

Now some of course will wonder where the rest is. Can’t we have a day to enjoy ourselves? Seriously though, more is coming, just in little bits and batches. In fact, we’ll see the Grizzly Bear records come in next week. Not sure on the timing for the rest.

PS: You lucky Euros get Selected Ambient Works Vol. II as well!

This is great – very happy to see this stuff, especially the early Autechre which I didn’t have yet.

Speaking of the early 90′s, does anyone else remember the farm? Oh, 1991. This album and EMF were constantly in my *tape* player.

You guys continue to amaze. Is the new Grizzly Bear disc — Veckatimest — going to be on eMusic? It’s being released in late May on Warp Records.

    how about Broadcast?

that i dunno. grizzly bear is a very special case. (more on that soon.)

Nice to see Warp finally succumbing to the wonder that is emusic, but it would have been nice if they’d included a few current records, most of these records are 15 to 20 years old! Some of them may be brilliant records (Aphex, Autechre, Nightmares On Wax) but without the likes of the new Hudson Mohawk mini album, Flying Lotus or Gang Gang Dance, this is not the great day that music fans were waiting for. So lets keep our fingers crossed and hope we get the new stuff! So what next Yancey, when are you going to convince those grumps at Domino Records to get on board?

I’ve got Yellow House. Never been much of a fan, but — no joke — eMusic’s writers sometimes spark my interest in stuff that I’ve dismissed before, so I’m looking forward to reading your review of it. And I hear that the new disc is something special.

While we’re on the subject, any chance we’ll see these artists’ Warp records on eMusic: Stereolab; Boards of Canada; Jamie Lidell; Battles; Flying Lotus; and Broadcast?

Funny thing, Daniel — our reviewer, Andy Battaglia, said a similar thing, but makes a strong case for the record as a “grower.”

This is a good day, Warp arriving at eMusic, there’s some good stuff there already, and plenty more to come I hope. But i have similar feelings to those of citizenwatt, much of it is pretty early Warp, much of it I have already, and it does seem a sort of muted arrival, more re cent releases would have really given warp’s arrival that jolt that it could have been. Having said that emusic is definitely healthier from having Warp in it’s library, it’s far better than no Warp.

Ecstatic that Warp came over, even if I already own a lot of their old stuff. But does this mean that they will slowly work their way up to more recent stuff? I am in love with Jamie Lidell’s Jim but haven’t been able to find a decent copy of his previous solo albums. If they showed up… let’s just say that I’d be doing a little dance.

Awesome stuff, loving Polygon Window so far. Can’t wait to get more. Very cool to see some words from Todd!

Though I unfortunately can’t d/l it, Selected Ambient Works Vol 2 should be updated with the generally accepted track names rather than just the numbers. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selected_Ambient_Works_Volume_II

is emusic getting the new grizzly bear album next week?

  14. 14 yancey

    no that’s not until may

    For Porieux-
Those track names for SAW II have never been official except for Blue Calx. Even bleep.com reflects that.

Any Word (oh god I hate these posts LOL) on whether we’ll see the New K’Naan Album Troubadour http://www.emusic.com/artist/K-naan-MP3-Download/11617532.html release tomorrow
