Nothing super big name today, but a bunch of little nuggets. Here’s a rundown of some of the notables and nice surprises new to the site this week.

Awesome Wells, The Highs and Lows of De Witt a Stanton: Surprise #1 and probably the most exciting one of today’s lot. “Hard to classify” gets thrown around a lot in today’s post-Animal Collective, sample-everything clusterfuck, but these guys are hard to… you know. Underwater sleigh bells, cooing harmonies, crappy Dictaphone field samples, random accordion. Wot do u call it, really? Well in any case, it’s a very nice, very enveloping listen.

Bricolage, Bricolage: Like Orange Juice? So do Bricolage. (Incidentally, so does Joe… a lot.)

Goblin, Il Fantastico Viaggio Del Bagarozzo Mark: From the legendary Italian horror soundtrackers (Suspiria, Zombi) is another sufficiently spooky, early synth experiment freakout.

Darren Johnston, The Edge of the Forest: I don’t really know post-bop from “Mmm Bop” but I am into this record. It’s kind of aggressive and “out” without being willfully unlistenable. Apparently Down Beat called Johnston “one of 25 Trumpeters of the Future.” Maybe I should write for them.

Play, Chasing the Sun: Total mid-period OMD. Fans of over-the-top synth pop with a few downloads to burn, have at it.

Europe Only:

Future of the Left, Last Night I Saved Her From Vampires: I’d never heard much about Future of the Left, but apparently it’s a bunch of guys from Mclusky, who had great song titles. This is a fast, raucous live album in the spazzy punk style of the Drive Like Jehu/Rocket from the Crypt/Hot Snakes axis.

Atmosphere, God Loves Ugly: Emo backpacker? God, nothing sounds worse than that. I really loved this when I was 17.

I’m digging the Awesome Wells. On a side note, I don’t know if there is a way to request new labels that might be considered for the emusic roster, but I would be really interested if there was a system in place to do so. For the record: Echospace and Miasmah would be very welcome additions. Thanks!

i confess to checking for both echospace and miasmah at least a couple times a month in vain hope, as well as a couple other labels which have slipped my mind. also, i love goblin, in a totally non-randon, non-quirky and non-ironic way. they just kick ass, one of the most underrated bands of the 70s. awesome wells sounds cool. thanks for the heads up. um… yeah.

From what I understand, the Goblin album is a concept album following a journey made by an insect (the title roughly translates as “The Fantastic Voyage of Mark The Beetle”). Sounds like a fairly good outing for the group, who I pretty much have to like as a fan of horror movies and early Argento…

The Atmosphere album’s not available to me in Spain, but there’s another album of theirs I noticed that I haven’t picked up yet, so I’ll get that instead :)

I listened to Awesome Wells for about 12 hours straight yesterday. It’s brilliant. Between that and Bruce Peninsula, I’d have to say that 2009 is off to a good start!

Oops almost downloaded Goblin Cock (http://www.emusic.com/album/Goblin-Cock-Come-With-Me-If-You-Want-to-Live-MP3-Download/11371127.html) instead of Goblin (live and learn) ;)
But seriously eMusic just rolled Whe Wrestler Soundtrack out (haven’t listened yet but lots of 80’s hair metal)

You may have to remove your trackback URL feature or add some sort of spam block to it as well. Milkbone Rape is not a good nor safe site and . . . Most of the trackbacks are spammy or even dangerous

Thanks for the catch, Nergal – just from the URL I could tell that site was repulsive. I deleted.

Although that’s an awesome name for a Metal Band Milkbone Rape :X
