This week on 17 Dots on East Village Radio, I pulled out some of the big hits, doing my best to define the edges of the indie canon, by request. But we also hear from a lot of new artists as well. Pay attention, in particular, to Julianna Barwick and Fan Death. Both of those will be 17 Dots favorites. And as a reminder, here’s how you can listen:

Speaking of Juliana Barwick, don’t miss her remix/remake of Radiohead’s “Reckoner.” http://www.radioheadremix.com/remix/?id=4

Hey Yancey, can we expect the new Arthur Russell album tomorrow? Thanks!

I’m not seeing it in our content tool. We do get Audika stuff, though, so just a matter of when not if. Almost certainly not tomorrow, however.

That’s too bad, I seem to remember emusic getting other Audika albums on release day.

So, I last night I finally got a chance to sit down and listen to the show, with headphones and without interruption. The verdict: I’m now in love with Modest Mouse and the Silver Apples. Those tracks get the golden star for Friday’s indie music history lesson (I’m partial to songs I can either shake or sing to). Overall, I thought it was a really good introduction to a genre of music that I’ve only recently started to follow (I was raised on Prince, Dennis Brown, and EPMD). There were a few familiar jams, but of the remaining unknowns, my attention peaked with Surf City’s dancable “Records of a Flagpole Sitter,” Future Islands’ super fun “Beach Foam,” the dreamy demo “Art Opening,” by The Affair, and The Rapture.

Honorable mention to Richard Swift, Salem, and Rocket From the Tombs whose “Amphetamine” I kinda hated at first, but the lead singer reminded me of Bob Dylan so I let them slide. There were a lot of backwoods twangy tracks in the mix, which I usually don’t go for, but there was one song about whites, women, and wine (or something), that made me crack a grin. and of course, there’s nothing better than a shout-out. thanks yancey! and to everyone else: post more recommendations!

andrea thanks so much for the in-depth response! i’m surprised that the silver apples were one of yr favorites! that’s great! was there anything you really DIDN’T like? and if you had to pick a song and say, “i wanna hear more like this,” which one would it be?

I kinda zoned out from Little Feat to Jon Brion and the last three songs molded together and trailed off into one long note. It’s not that I didn’t like them, they just didn’t make me want to care. Is that mean? I’d like to hear more Salem and Jerry Crusade vibes. You can also toss in a little Kraftwerk, Julianna Barwick, and upbeats like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

yancey… future islands… thanks for playing this. It took me close to a month to listen to the podcast, but i got through it today and i’m already obsessed. I’m sure you’ve done your hardest to get the ‘wave like home’ album on emusic, but they are currently recording (according to their myspace) so maybe now is a good time to try again? Anyway just wanted to say thanks, these guys are right up my alley. This was my favourite show so far. Also, any chance of emusic launching an Australia site? We need it… we’re missing out on heaps! We need someone to negotiate with the labels over here really bad!
