Not so much ‘New on eMusic’ as ‘Back on eMusic,’ the Ace Fu label returns with a healthy selection of pick hits. Among them:
Ex-Models, Other Mathematics: I love this record like crazy; I’m not crazy about the willfully difficult direction the band pursued after this, but this debut, full of herky-jerk tunes that recalls White Music-era XTC, is all gold.
Annuals, Be He Me: Yesterday’s blog hits today: Annuals big wall-of-fire sound arrives just a few weeks before (or after?) their major label debut.
The Dears, Protest: The origins of Montreal sweethearts — what goes better with an election season than protest?
Man Man, Six Demon Bag: Another ‘before they were stars’ snapshot, this one from Philly phreaks Man Man.
Pinback, Pinback; Pinback, Blue Screen Life: Writing this post, I’m starting to realize just how much foresight Ace Fu had. These guys had everyone.
Secret Machines, September 000: Case in point.

I love the Pinback. I ‘m not too familiar with the other Ace Fu records bands, so I’ll do some digging.
Man.. Pinback’s “Blue Screen Life” had made the transfer of my last 6 computers. Love that album.
Also of note is Illinois’ “What the Hell Do I Know.” What’s the deal with Ace Fu? Neither their website nor their Myspace has been updated in almost a year, and all these arrivals are not exactly new. Are they still around or have they moved on to the Great Big Label in the Sky?
The David Barsamian benefit album is great.
The Dears yes….Also liking Man Man in a very Tom Waitsy way. I also like Secret Machines but the sample tracks don’t really give much insight into them. Will have to check it out more thoroughly on myspace….
And Ptolemy, how is it possible that I did not know about Illinois? Good point out on that one.
Sara, Man Man is superfun. Be sure to grab “Black Mission Goggles” and “Ice Dogs”, both from Six Demon Bag. Glad you like Illinois!
