Incredible Bongo Band
(not Incredible Bongo Band, but this is “Apache,” and a classic of the Information Super Highway)
Last week, in a search for some new tunes, one link led to another and I ended up “discovering” Incredible Bongo Band’s Bongo Rock, a remarkably dope album tucked away in the pages of eMusic. This album is ridiculously layered and calculated with vicious, hypnotic bursts of sound. So much soul, so much heart, and surprisingly so many now iconic hip hop breaks, I couldn’t wipe away my drool fast enough. Bongo Rock, released in 1972, is unequivocal ‘70s funk with its organ vamps, steady drums, and rowdy horns, but its tentacles have seeped into the vibes of countless DJs and emcees over the past 30 odd years, birthing what Andre Torres noted as “some of the funkiest grooves ever recorded.” DJ Kool Herc spawned a revolution with just a few seconds of “Apache.” The Sugarhill Gang, Nas, KRS-1, Beastie Boys, and countless others helped spread the word. Even the Fresh Prince of Bel Air with his sidekick Carlton snapped their hips into the now ubiquitous “Apache Dance,” memorialized in viral videos and on Old-School Night dance floors. I obviously can’t say enough about this record, except that if you slept on it like I did, there’s still time for redemption.

My favorite band of the moment tucked away in emusic obscurity is The Uglysuit.

This is one of the albums that actually sold me on my eMusic subscription. Nice to see it getting some notice.
Ditto Randy’s comment. One of my first eMusic downloads and still one of my faves.
