So, while trawling MySpace researching a potential Selects bands today, I came across something very, very weird: the Young Rapture Choir. The Young Rapture Choir is a group of French middle schoolers… who cover Grandaddy’s The Sophtware Slump, as well as select songs from Under the Western Freeway. There’s definitely some Langley Schools here — especially in terms of the instrumental accompaniment, which is messy and performed with the kind of instruments you might find in a middle school music room — but obviously with a bit more self-awareness, primarily thanks to their music teacher, one Patrice, who maintains a page updating us on the group’s plans, which include performing music by Elliott Smith, Liam Finn, Sean Lennon, the Beatles and others in the years to come. In addition, by providing an email addy, you can download the group’s nine-song album, free. Check it here.

If anyone else is interested in this type o’ thing, you should check out the PS22 Chorus (http://ps22chorus.blogspot.com/). They’re most widely known for their Tori Amos covers (their version of “Not the Red Baron” is absolutely crushing). Much less indie than Young Rapture Choir, but no less talented. :) A bunch of free MP3s on their page on the left side. If you’re, you know, into that.
