The video above (of Crystal Stilts highlight “Through the Floor”) showcases the Stilts’ latest lineup, with new(ish) drummer Frankie and keyboardist Kyle — it’s a full, fierce sound and miles from when I first saw the band about a year ago.
I first heard about Crystal Stilts when I was trying to book their bro-band, NYC crash-poppers cAUSE co-MOTION!. They couldn’t do the date, but sent over a list of bands I should check out instead. The Stilts were by far the best of the lot. With a strong Jesus & Mary chain vibe, leaning heavily on girl group, floor-tom-and-tamborine and surf-rock vibes, they nailed all my “I’m a sucker for that kinda thing” buttons. Of course, they couldn’t play the show either.
When I first saw ‘em live, the Stilts were a three-piece, playin’ over their head. The songs were there: awesome reverb-soaked caveman stomps. But JB (guitarist) had to do double duty, stamping the kick drum in between furious strumming. With each progressive show (and each progressive record release), it’s been exponentially heartening to see such a great band (of great people) grow bigger, better and bolder.
If you haven’t already, do yourself a favor and check out their Selects-blessed EP, check out my Q&A with the guys and keep a fresh eye out for their Slumberland full-length Alight of Night. And, of course, come see ‘em tomorrow night!
