I don’t dare try to fill the (dancin’) shoes of the legendary-’round-these-parts Todd L. Burns, but I will try from time to time to share some electronic music I find of interest. This week has actually been incredibly fruitful for electronic music, not least in part because of the (US) arrival of Domino Records. First, and perhaps most excitingly, though, is Hans-Peter Lindstrøm’s new epic three song LP.

Lindstrøm, Where You Go I Go Too: The much-buzzed-about new LP from everyone’s fave Norwegian cosmic disco/balaeric/beardo master. Unlike 2006’s (incredible) It’s a Feedelity Affair, which collected his italo-flavored dance singles, Lindstrøm stretches out (WAY OUT) here. Three tracks (bargain alert!) of sprawling, Tangerine Dream-y, vintage synth workouts. Many will be surprised; many more will be impressed. It actually hasn’t grabbed me like I thought it would after a few dedicated listens. Some moments of subtle bliss, for sure (the cascading, layered build throughout much of “Grand Ideas”), but I think I keep hoping for more exciting…melodic ideas (?) to appear. That said: absolutely worth your three downloads.

Tensnake, Restless EP: Hamburg-based producer; another Italo-lovin’ guy. He had a remix on one of the Sally Shapiro remix comps, appropriately. The centerpiece of this EP is “Around the House,” a clappy, tasteful, boogie-influenced electro track.

In Flagranti, Business Acumen EP: These guys are insanely prolific, even for electronic producers. Maybe because often make dance tracks that are pop song-length (see the great, underrated Wronger Than Anyone Else). The original mix here is a twisted, mutant disco complete with cowbells and a slightly-off bass pulse. Also of note: DFA up-and-comer Holy Ghost! submits a “cover version” here, straightening out the groove and adding some short synth stabs.

Domino Stuff: US ONLY

Four Tet, Ringer EP: Out-of-leftfield minimal techno EP from the guy who was formerly (terribly) labeled as “folktronica” (don’t sleep on Rounds, gorgeous album). This is of surprisingly high quality: swirling synth overlaps with a subtle pulse. The bubbling “Ribbons” is a mega-highlight.

Junior Boys, Various: Hard not to recommend all of this. I ended up liking skittering Last Exit more than the more-straightforward (at least drum programming-wise) So This Is Goodbye, but I think both are fantastic records. Also, MANDATORY listening is the Carl Craig remix of “Like a Child” found on The Dead Horse EP. A few other heavy hitters handle remixing there too (Hot Chip, dubstepper Kode 9 and the aforementioned Tensnake).

Von Südenfed, Tromatic Reflexxions: Mark E. Smith and Mouse on Mars collaborate to make a snotty, LCD Soundsystem-sounding full-length. Wait, what?

And finally…a Canada-only special!

Benny Benassi, Satisfaction: You know this song. It’s got that video. With the girl. In the bikini. Hammering stuff. You heard it coming from the dorm room down the hall from the kid who had searched Napster for “techno.” Well now you got it! And about ten remixes too.

No Mention of the Simpsons :(

I got a couple of tracks (Listened to the No preview ones on Amazon then came back to eMusic to download ;-D )

Quite a few times I wish that eMusic was faster with new releases. When I read about a new album and get excited, I want that album right away, while I have the feeling. I always check with eMusic first and though eMusic’s big selection often surprises me it’s also quite often I can’t find the newest releases. Like Lindstrom here. I bought it in another shop the week before last because I was excited after reading about it all over the net. Does it really have to take 2-3 weeks before it shows up at eMusic?

Olf, I hear you on that. Best I can say is that if you ever wonder if we are getting something, ask. We might not know exactly when it might come, but we should know if something is coming at all. We’ll certainly do our best, anyway.

I like the Lindstrom so far, need to listen more though. I thought that Benassi was on eMusic US already? Maybe it disappeared since then.

@Olf: Release dates are almost always down to the label, I believe, and they will sometimes have different policies across the globe. For example, the EU got Vampire Weekend’s debut album through XL on the day of release, North America had to wait 3 months even though it’s the same label.

But yeah, as Yancey says drop a note in the forum or here and someone should have an idea of whether it’ll be an immediate release or delayed. Either way, it’s labels who are making the bad decisions trying to make sense of the digital era…

OK, I sure will ask the next time. That sounds like personal service to me. Return of the friendly old record store on the corner?

On that note, is emusic getting the new Stereolab any time soon?

  8. 8 yancey

The Stereolab was held back. In the past with that label, albums that did not arrive on street came about 90 days later. So something along those lines.

… so, before i run to the record store, is emusic getting The Bug - London Zoo?

  10. 10 yancey

yes! or i should say i would be very very surprised if we do not. we actually have a call out to the distributor about this, and i will update this when i find out. but short answer: hold off on going to the record store. oh, and the record is quite good.

Justw anted to add mention of a new electronic release that seems to have slipped through the cracks - Morgan Geist’s Detroit single, with vocals from a Junior Boy and not 1 but 2 Carl Craig remixes. Pretty great stuff.

That Evil Nine single (They Live) that showed up a while back is also good.
Hopefully the album of the same name is forthcoming.

JD - that Morgan Geist LP is pretty solid. Said Junior Boy shows up on a lot of tracks - ends up feelin’ like a groove-ier JBs record after all. I believe we’ll be getting for October.

Okay, this is when it sucks to be out of downloads and waiting for what seems like forever for a refresh to kick in. Man.

Liking the Young Marble Giants a lot, but then I have a thing for flighty female vocals I admit.

I also like the wall of sound effect from The Last Shadow Puppets. You get that walking into a symphony orchestra effect which I can enjoy but the obviously know how to play it up.

And why no mention of the Cass McCombs?
