na: domino $*#@ing records

Yesterday we promised that today would be a very good day for eMusic folks, and here’s the reason: Domino Recording Co. Home to the Arctic Monkeys, Clinic, Notwist, the Kills and so so so many more, this is a massive addition to the eMusic library, an eclectic catalogue perfect for the indie rock folks, sure, but also electronic fans, post-punk heads and avant-gardeners.
We put together a guide to what we think is essential from Domino. You can read that here. But we’re certain that we missed a few, and we all have our personal favorites, so share yours with the rest of the class below!

So so exciting – lots of goodies. Someone convince me on the genius Strawberry Jam, though. I thought the vocals/general mixing was a little…hamhanded? Or something?
That said, Four Tet Rounds, Josef K (!!!), Orange Juice (!!!!!!!!!!!), Neon Golden. Killer.
Favourite Domino album: Calenture by The Triffids (reissued 2007). One of the greatest albums ever: not rad electronica or hip post-punk, just incredible songs and performances. Should suit fans of Nick Cave, Tindersticks, that kind of thing. (The original album is tracks 1 to 12)
This is really great.
Robert Wyatt’s Comicopera is really really really good. I recomend that to everyone.
I’m especially excited about Sebadoh and Young Marble Giants. These are albums that I’ve wanted for a long time and never gotten.
Alex: I haven’t heard Strawberry Jam yet, but I’ve heard most of the rest of their stuff and my favorite is still Spirit They’ve Gone, Spirit They’ve vanished.

That being said I’m still going to get Straberry Jam as soon as my Downloads refresh
Any idea when/if this will come to the UK? Nearly cried when I saw the dreaded
ALBUM UNAVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD
We’re sorry. This album is unavailable for download in your country (United Kingdom) at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
How about Canada, I cried when I saw this too:

yeah, the territory restrictions definitely hurt. we are working to get it everywhere, and hope to have it at some point in the future.
Four Tet arrives!
And I’m almost out of downloads!
Noooo!
When The Kills popped up on my New & Noteworthy earlier this morning that was a big hint. But the full Domino catalog? Rock on, eMu.
Best news in ages. Thanks, emusic. I already own several of these, the Robert Wyatt and Last Shadow Puppets. But I’m looking forward to catching up with Clinic.
Two albums challenged my musical world in 1980.
Young Marble Giants – Colossal Youth
The Clash – London Calling
At least one is now available on eMusic.
Of course, I bought the three disc Young Marble Giants re-release shortly after it hit stores last spring.
Highly recommended, nonetheless.
great deal with domino. but unavailable in germany. very great deal. i’m really happy about this.
Nice to show up so late to the party and still be the only one to bring The Notwist. Even though I already had it, had to download Neon Golden just for karma’s sake.
“Pilot,” from Neon Golden, is one of the best pop songs of the decade.
YOU HAVE TO GET THIS _ON_ IN THE UK – TELL THEM I WILL USE ALL OF MY 90 CREDITS NEXT MONTH ON DOMINO STUFF.
yes i am shouting
Is there a problem with the page for Water Curses, by Animal Collective? Whenever I open it, the songs and the download button appear for a second, then vanish. I’ve attached a hyperlink below.

Egads!!!!! it disappeared (Kinda like the download section for the Download manager)

Daniel, the song from Neon Golden for me is One With the Freaks. Even though it’s clearly a pop song, it builds like the best dance songs from quiet, a single drum machine, to a glorious emotional peak, one instrument at a time. It’s a song of revelation and self-acceptance, the unexpected joy in melancholy that’s The Notwist’s unique stock in trade. Definitely worth the second purchase.
I’ve never found Ulrich Schnauss’s pieces on compliations, but the full releases on Domino are remarkable. Highlights for me are 2 recent EPs. neverChanger is 3 mixes of that track. parked in compliations, with a genre “Alternative/Punk” in “Indie Rock. Passing By is listed as an album with the genre Electronic in the style Indie Pop. I’m inclined to put both in the category of downtempo/electronic experimental…but the others kind of apply too. They combine for a tasty 7 song treat.
Tromatic Reflexxions by Von Südenfed is a lot of things, but the key for me is The Fall’s Mark E. Smith doing electronic dance, which has always been one of his mostly-hidden infatuations, but one perfect home for his much-vaunted repetition, repetition, repetition. And run-on sentences. This one’s accurately listed as electronic experimental, but sorely missing the “Punk, Alternative” style categorization.
So anyway, I’m having fun diving into Domino that I hadn’t been expecting. If the rest of the class haven’t checked out the guide yancey links above, by all means do. A great place to poke into corners you might not have thought of.
Two words: Colossal. Youth. I nearly picked up a used copy at Amoeba the other day because it wasn’t on eMusic. Glad I passed it up.
I don’t have much to add except that seeing Domino and Barsuk turn up here – two labels that have been on my wish list for quite a while – is fantastic. If Sub Pop and DFA suddenly pop on I can probably forget that anything but eMusic exists. Well, maybe Numero Group…
Thanks folks -
Numero Group seconded! (although the real joy with that label is reading the extensive booklet along with the music). Sub Pop and DFA also seconded.
Also, to be clear, all of Neon Golden is an essential download. One of the decade’s better discs.
Hey I recommend Sons & Daughters! This Gift is a fantastic album, saw them at T in the Park & they were excellent live.
yancey, what does “some point in the future” mean? is it in the meaning of a record company, like, “urgh…. ok next year, if we have to” or more in the meaning of an addict, like, “hey let’s put in on next week, to make autumn more thrilling?”
Yancey, do you know if the new Deerhoof album is getting here on Oct. 7th?
i believe so to deerhoof.
some point in the future means that it is not in our control, but we are making the case as much as we possibly can.
UK label not available in the UK…
they used to be…
is it because of their new mp3 shop…
