Be very careful Google Image searching the term “Kinky” on your work computer
Wow, New Music Tuesdays are a beautiful and bizarre thing to behold: baby-making music from around the world, ambient electronic, Mexican dance rock, rap classics, and James Taylor and Creedence Clearwater Revival. It’s 10:34 am, and I’ve already heard about five amazing new [...]

Did you sleep on that Au album that we were big-upping back in May? Watch the video above and see if you have second thoughts!

In the course of three days, I’ve seen Kevin Shields, J. Mascis, and Doug Martsch play guitar live, which to me, is an insane statement. Basically, they are my three favorite practitioners of guitar-heroism-by-other-means — dudes who, when I first heard them, gave me my first glimmering inkling of just how many sound worlds there [...]

So tomorrow marks the occasion of 17 Dots episode #2 on East Village Radio, and I have to say, it is a much-improved edition. There is at least one instance of beat matching, one attempt at a pretentious sound collage and a whole lotta good music! Okay, one of those things sounds attractive at least.
Anyway, [...]

down with nme

25Sep08

One of the highlights of my working week has become the arrival of each issue of the NME. In the ’90s, for a Yank like me NME was a ridiculous fetish object, the Rosetta Stone for all that was glorious about Brit-pop (I was a big Brit-pop fan), the arbiter of what mattered today and [...]

One of my abiding frustrations is, try though we may, we are curiously unable to persuade people to download hip-hop records from eMusic. It’s a predictable pattern: any time a hip-hop record is either Review of the Day or a Daily Download, it will not perform nearly as well as the indie records on either [...]

Back in Britain now and predictably it’s throwing down with rain. I’m warming my sodden feet with a few of this week’s new releases.

Last night I was blown away by Black Mountain and opener Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter playing at Bowery Ballroom. I hate “you should’ve been there” comments, but seriously. Black Mountain’s Stephen McBean wrangled huge sounds from his mighty prehistoric-shaped guitar and enormous effects pedal collection. Each song began slowly, building upon a deep [...]

So I managed to catch a show by a band by the name of My Bloody Valentine last night. You may not have heard of them — they’re still pretty new, and only have a couple Hype Machine entries — but I highly recommend checking them out when they come to your town. [...]

So, who is who on the eMusic employee compilation, the people have been asking. Here’s your track-by-track guide!
01 Letters Lost, “Eastern European Girls (Rock Mix)” — Evan Parness, Royalties
02 Johnny Marnell, “Let Me Show You” — Johnny Marnell, Engineering
03 Kotorino, “Dangle Tango” — Jeff Morris, Engineering
04 Verystereo, “Completely Incomplete (Alt. Version)” — David Pakman (drummer/co-songwriter), [...]

Let’s celebrate a stellar day of new arrivals!

Earlier today, I found what I thought was a hidden treasure — The Bitter Springs, Last Party, Porky’s Ranch. A quick spin through the samples confirmed my suspicions: this record was so up my alley. Kind of blunt, unpracticed guitar, David Gedge-like vocals and that fantastic ’80s British indie shamble. When Alex also hadn’t heard [...]

The “Goth will never die” piece in the NY Times the other day, besides offering the profoundly jarring mental picture of a NY Times fashion reporter joining “I’m a Goth!” Facebook groups to conduct research/interviews, did manage to get me thinking about the two or three poor souls in the extremely blue-collar town where I [...]

Ok! So, show #1 is in the books, so let’s talk about how you go about hearing it! There are four ways:
1) You subscribe to the podcast in iTunes. As of now, 17 Dots on EVR is not officially in the iTunes podcast library, so to listen, simply click on the “Advanced” menu in iTunes, [...]

17 Dots has to be one of the weirdest music blogs out there in that we might be the only one that does not post music. Ever. We can’t post MP3s to download, and we can’t post streams either. Considering our obvious eMusic affiliation, the bar is raised quite a bit higher with us, and [...]

Showtime

18Sep08

How would you feel if every time you went to see a band they played an amazing 45 minute set and then walked away? There’s a huge debate going on over at the Guardian website on this very topic. The writer suggests many bands play for far too long and should go for quality not [...]

Hello!!
So. My name is Jayson Greene, and I’m the “new Todd,” in eMusic office parlance. If you Google my name, (…..not like I’ve done that — ever) you will find that there is a lead singer of a “screamo” (scare quotes firmly in place) band called The Panthers with my name, even with my unnecessarily [...]

Cats In Paris

17Sep08

This week 17 Dots token Brit (i.e. me) has made it off the island and is currently hanging with the other Dotters in NYC. That said I still retain a strong commitment to my side of the Atlantic, so I’m going to totally ignore my surroundings and talk about Manchester-based Cats In Paris.
Cats In Paris [...]

I struggled mightily to figure out what to include in the title of this post — it was an odd and all-over-the-place group of new arrivals today. Some surprises (Cody, various DJ-Kicks) and some under-the-radar stuff well worth checkin’ (Grouper, Eddy Current Suppression Ring). Not much to tie it all together so…let’s get to it!
