For the first time in what feels like forever, I have spent the past few days actually listening to music: scouting potential Selects bands (we have one — knock on wood — on board, considering some others), peeping my massive to-listen pile and, most enjoyably, listening for actual pleasure, something I don’t get to do nearly enough. Here’s what’s been in rotation.
Oneida, Preteen Weaponary: Coming out on August 5, and I’m really liking it. At a measly three tracks (all of them ten-plus minutes), this will be a real bargain for eMusic folk. It reminds me quite a bit of Each One Teach One, grooving and melodic. Definitely recommended.
Various Artists, Ishumar: I mentioned this one just last week, but Joe and I were getting down to this record this morning, and both of us really really really really love it. Sample for sure, and if you like what you hear, don’t hesitate to download.
Sonic Chicken 4, Sonic Chicken 4: I know nothing about this album, but it sounds like the Velvet Underground Robert Quine tapes. Awesomely derivative.
Santogold + Diplo, Top Ranking: Aside a few wow moments, pretty disappointing.
Sekar Jaya Gamelan, American Works for Balinese Gamelan Orchestra: A big thanks to the message boards for recommending this. Definitely my favorite of the New World stuff so far.
Prince Douglas, Dub Roots: Absolutely worthy of the hype.
Future Islands, Follow Me: Very Pere Ubu (poppier, but a similar feel), and a totally rad single. This hit the site today, but it’s already become a bit of an obsession. If you have an extra track to burn, consider this one.
So what are you spinning?

Abe Vigoda - Skeleton Key
Wold - Screech Owl (hasn’t left my ipod since I downloaded it a couple of months ago; if you’re into extreme noise)
I’ve been enjoying the Southern Lord catalog too, and I recomend trying out Gran Poder - very good but hasn’t been talked about much.
Deastro has also been a constant favorite since it came out.
How do you like the Abe Vigoda, Adamm?
And Deastro. Everytime people hear him they are converted. We are trying to convince him to let us put together Keeper’s 2, since he gave us about 100 tracks that we pulled those ten from. But there are so many more great ones. Fingers crossed!
I really like Abe Vigoda a lot - it’s a very dense little album; something different sticks out every time I hear it.
And a Keepers 2 would be great. Here’s hoping.
I’m gonna be a very bad person and ask the following. Is there any chance that the Santogold/Diplo project is gonna show up?
My guess is: there is zero chance.
I had heard absolutely no hype on the Prince Douglas album (where do you find hype for dub albums??) so thanks for pointing that out.
Only two albums have gotten heavy (and I mean really heavy) rotation this week are Dr. Dog’s “Fate” and Pink Nasty’s “Mold the Gold,” both of which were surprises for me.
