happy independence day
As we prepare for our quintessential American birthday celebration and Independents Day, the worldwide celebration of independent music, I wanted to take a moment to share some important milestones here at eMusic.
First, eMusic is celebrating our tenth birthday this year. Ten years of leading the industry in selling unencumbered MP3s. Ten years of focusing on the innovative music made because someone has something to say, not because they have something to sell. Ten years of giving you, the consumer, better value in exchange for your willingness to explore and try new things.
We’ve added some of the most exciting music in years – Radiohead, My Morning Jacket, the Kompakt catalogue, our eMusic Selects picks – with even more great independent music on the way. Our audiobooks catalog has doubled in size in the last six months, and we’ve signed every major publisher except one. While MTV and Yahoo have closed down their music services, eMusic has grown by more than 60% over the past year. In the face of Amazon’s entry into the space, we have grown our market share to more than 10%.
Most importantly, you should know we haven’t slowed down. As a company we’ve worked harder on our website and our business this year than ever. So get ready - we have more new site features rolling out in the next four months than we’ve shipped in the last four years! We’re already busily preparing for a blockbuster holiday season.
So, I hope you’ll share some pride with me during our nation’s birthday celebration and Independents Day. You, more than any other music retailer’s customers, understand the value of music that transcends rules, boundaries and commercialism and we appreciate your contribution to the success of the world’s best independent music retailer. Thanks so much for making this possible.
Have a great holiday weekend.
Respectfully,
David

Happy 10th birthday eMusic! I’m curious about the results of the best album and artist on eMusic. There probably aren’t clear winners. I look forward to seeing the new features when they roll out!
Hopefully, one of the new features will be an improved search function! I just needed to use it…and got thousands of results, in no apparent order, which can’t be sorted in anyway! Basically useless.
10 Years? Has it been that long? Wow. I remember not long after Napster was shut down, I received an e-mail for eMusic and though all my friends told me I was crazy to pay for downloads (Ahem…) I signed up. And I liked it. I even stayed through the transition from the original, “All You Can Download for One Price!” scheme of the early days to the current monthy capped amount of downloads (Boy were some people mad…) But you have always had the music I like - best selection of Electronic Music anywhere - and have kept adding more… I almost wept the day you added the 4AD Label ’s Catalog! You continue to surprise and please me so keep it up… Happy Independence Day and Happy 10th!
yes - 10 years - one of their original artists, greyboy, has had to change his name to greybeard.
sorry.
stank motherhubbard! qwynwyn has 65posts here..what she celebratin’?
Happy birthday !
When you’re 10 its really the time in life where you grow fast and that is certainly what emusic does in theese times. The Emusic staff has definately got a lot to be proud of.
Please allow me to come up with a few suggestions to help you grow, and at the same time offer a birthday gift to the subschribers:
Avaiability of Thrill Jockey and Crammed Discs in Europe and reapearance of the Durtro/Jnanna label.
Very much looking forward to the next 10 years. /Brighternow.
Happy anniversary emu. There was a time everybody thought you were crazy selling non-DRM mp3s and now it is becoming industry standard. Wishing you many years of continuous growth, an expansion of your international catalog, and for DRM to be vanquished forever.
Happy Birthday/Anniversary to what’s turned into my favourite record store.
I used to spend hours and hours flipping through the bins in various record stores listening to what was playing on their stereo (”What are you playing?…” being a common question).
Now I spend hours and hours flipping through the pages of the download manager, reading 17dots, and clicking yet another album into my never to be emptied “Save for Later” list. I’ve heard much more music in the last few years because of eMusic. Many. many great albums.
My wishes for your future are getting more Canadian artists to be available in Canada, for you to sign more artists (from wee-small bands to the recently-indie-but-now-a-bit-bigger bands), and for artists to hopefully be making enough money to keep doing the art they are doing.
Cheers!
Ahhhhh, yas!
“Independence Day”. Long has it been my favorite holiday.
Congrats on reaching double digits. And fie on those Industry Scoffers!
Say, I’m just curious (not trying for snarky — just curious): Is there ANYBODY on staff (maybe a little minion down in the email room or a customer service rep) who has weathered all the ownership transitions and relocations? Somebody who actually remembers what things were like back on Day One? Or even as far back as when eMu was this tiny, forgotten holding on the books of Universal-Vivendi?
I know there are a handful of subscribers who go back that far.
In any case — Happy 4th.
Still looking forward to the return of the Stones and Zappa catalogs (maybe Wednesday, no?)……
Woof!
Independents Day indeed!!!
eMusic has a task ahead of itself:
Prove the naysayers are wrong.
Keep up the good work, keep your faithful subscribers interested, successfully woo the labels that deserve to reap the benefits of what eMusic does better than all other competitors, and make the world right.
…see you in another ten years.
Happy Independents Day!
Happy 10th Birthday to the best damn website out there!!! ::raises glass:: Here’s to many, many more!
Thank you for the music ; )
Independents Day, indeed! And a happy 4th of July!
Keep on getting great music!
Keep on getting good music too!!! Happy 4th of July.
