On Tuesday, eMusic released a beta version of the download manager, a slick new incarnation that automatically syncs your music to any player, among a few other bells and whistles. Best of all? It has an incredibly small footprint, and won’t hog your machine. Instead, it largely runs in the background, and seamlessly gets you your music. We’re very happy with it, and we want all of you to be as well. If you haven’t yet downloaded it, head here and give it a spin. And if you have any feedback you’d like to share, you can do that there as well.

After the XUL version I am leary, so yancey is this another incarnation of that? or is it more like the manager that (still in my opinion) wasn’t really broken.

Sorry this probably wasn’t the type of comment you wanted for the first comment, but I a’scared

There’s no need to be scared! I have not had any problems, and I have a ridiculous setup. Give it a spin! Really! It’s not scary!

Yeah, I’m gonna co-sign — I really like the new Download Manager, and recommend it to all.

ummm well I got it, and now emp files have no registered application (windows) I told it to use the new manager but it only opens the manager still no download, I upgraded from download manager not remote and I was not signed to eMusic on when I ran the installer. missing something I am?

luckily my downloads don’t refresh for a few more days, sigh, answer soon plz.

Yeah you have to associate the EMPs first time it runs. Are you trying to redownload something you already have?

naw free track on the new prestige/ruby

I did associate (maunally) and even redownloaded manager no luck :(

The Remote does not use EMP files, it uses EMX files. You should see EMX files after the Download Manager is installed, but I saw a page yesterday (the free daily download page) where it was still serving me EMP files. I came back later and it gave me an EMX file, so I am not really sure what the deal is, but that would be an issue with the site and it’s detection of the Download Manager 4.0 as opposed to the application itself. Please let me know if you continue to see EMP files only.

I tested it earlier this morning. I did have to associate with the .exe file. The new dlm worked fine for me although one track seemed to hang - but the dl’d track was actually OK.

but I’m still getting EMPs not EMXs. both in Free Daily and in actual emusic, should I restart my computer :( is there a forum topic for this so I’m drowning 17dots in my problems?

I was a little wary of this one after the last new dl manager, but it seems to work pretty well. Downloaded a song, opened WMP, and it was already there in the library. Didn’t have to manually rescan the library or anything.

The different views are nice too. So far, so good! Thanks for the heads up.

oh well for now I’ll just keep using DLM 3.0 :( has anyone had success going from 3.0 to 4.0 without first installing remote. By the way, for some reason when I load the dlm webpage the downloads appear and then disapear :( Not a Good day for MiDoJo in his eMusical World :(

Well, I’ve been using EmusicJ ever since the site switched over to the download manager catastrophe that shall not be named. However, being a bit adventurous I am trying the beta and so far I don’t want to kill Yancy; I take that as a good sign.

I admit to being more than a little murderous after the forced upgrade to the old DLM when I really liked the simply lite DLM that got killed. If it had not been for EmusicJ I might have canceled my subscription.

But, I’m hopeful, and this incarnation is working smoothly. Cheers.

Am I the only eMusic subscriber who actually likes eMusic Remote? It works every bit as well for me as the old DLM did, while improving on it in many cases.

Clearly, the software had problems — the incessant kvetching here and on the eMu message boards would be a fair indicator that is, in fact, the unfortunate case. But, in my own experience, it works just fine.

I had bad memories of the forced ‘upgrade’ to Remote like others here, I was persuaded to try the new beta and it’s definitely still a beta with the bugs it has. The installation went fine with no need to uninstall the old DLM or emusic/J, both of which I have on my main Windows XP PC. It did lose the download history that it had copied from my old DLM and the previous day’s downloads when I opened it again the next day, and I can’t seem to get that back, I have the settings to retain them but that doesn’t work for me. Downloads are much faster than when using the old version, consistently near my 8mbps max download speed, previously I was lucky to get 2mbps when i have a reliable fast connection for just about everything else. The feedback link on it does not work for me, so I’ve had to use the normal contacts method. At the moment there are definitely both pro’s and con’s involved with using the new DLM from my experiences.

i’m using the beta with the latest (updated) version of firefox and am moving downloads straight into the latest (updated) version of itunes (which is always open). my operating system is XP, which (predictably) is fully updated.

i often listen to an emusic album in one tab within firefox and then open another and download/browse emusic from this tab.

when trying to download a track this situ seems to generate an error message from the download manager which then causes firefox to close. this error has happened downloading approx 10% to 20% of my tracks since picking up the beta at the end of last week

am i alone with this prob?

  16. 16 yancey

i haven’t seen that, dpotta, and i am using the same setup as you. i will bring this up with the developers.

btw, approximately 80% of the problems people have reported have been fixed in a soon-to-be-launched new dlm. some good finds so far, so please keep them coming!

hello just started using this ad well just here to show sum love

  18. 18 dpotta

thanx yancey - i mailed the beta address with the info too.

i like the feel of this dm and even without the iron-outs it’s a good improvement!

Excellent upgrade. This version also adds the album art image file into the folder which the last one didn’t (at least for me anyway). That small but significant improvement alone is a massive useability upgrade so thanks again.

Worked right away on first try. I love being able to click “download album” and have the whole thing come sailing down in seconds. What a great upgrade from the s-l-o-w eMusic remote!

I hope this comment is still seen, coming late as it does. I have put the beta on both computers to which I download, and have found myself with problems burning CDs including recently-downloaded tracks (The Last Shadow Puppets, and Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, specifically.) I use Nero to burn CDs, and have never had a problem in the past. Has something changed in the beta that will not allow me to burn to disc, as either audio or in mp3 format? This is important, as the place I listen most to music is on my car stereo . . .

    Thanks,

    Randy
