That is pretty much what Trent Reznor did for the Saul Williams release and subsequent NIN releases. You could download lower quality files for free or pay $5 to get your choice of high quality MP3, FLAC or Apple Lossless.

I paid extra for the single mixed track. my old ipod doesn’t play gapless audio. great record. i hope it’s a success.

He picked a really smart pricing scheme. He made it easy for people to talk themselves up to paying more (“It’s just a few dollars more for the FLAC files…”). At least, that’s what going through my head.
