Guest bloggers? 17 Dots has hit the big-time, surely. Or we’re lazy. Either way, here’s eMusic UK freelancer Neil Mason unearthing some new releases specifically for our UK users.
London’s Moshi Moshi label seems to be taking over the world. What really stands out this week—to my ears at any rate—are two releases that both have the MM seal of approval… aside from that I also stumbled across a cracking band I’d completely forgotten about. Thank heavens for virtual rummaging, eh?
Dananananaykroyd
Glasgow’s Dananananaykroyd are a tidy find despite the rather daft name. A release on London’s fine Moshi Moshi label is a reliable seal of approval and they have one of those to their name thanks the riotous “Totally Bone,” which appeared on the label’s fine Singles Club way back in 2006. In these tough times when fresh success is only measured by how fast your rise to fame is, it’s reassuring to see the ‘kroyd aren’t letting standards slip with Sissy Hits, a new six-track EP. A chaotic, janglesome romp, they have a sound like the Fall meeting the Police round Bloc Party’s house. As both a song title and a song I am mostly loving “Cleaning Each Other.”
Florence and the Machine
And while we’re on the subject of the Moshi Moshi Singles Club, can I point you in the direction of their latest release? Can I? I can. The Florence part is 21-year-old Florence Welch, whose best pal is none other than the glorious Lightspeed Champion, which should give you some idea of the quality on show here. Out this week, the new single, “Kiss with a Fist,” is life-affirming, low slung, rumbling, twanging garage rock. What’s more it’s topped off with an effortlessly classic voice, which could sit in any decade from the ’50s onwards. And any song that begins, “You hit me once/ I hit me back/ You gave a kick, I gave a slap/ You smashed a plate over my head/ Then I set fire to our bed” is more than alright with me.
Glamour For Better
There’s so much great music at your fingertips these days that, on occasion, some of the really good stuff does tend to slip clean through the gaps. I’d utterly forgotten about GFB, a shouty, breakneck, racketous, drums falling down the stairs kind of four piece from the London borders. Thank goodness for this remix of “Architechs of Discotech” (one of their finest moments) jogging the memory. Check the debut album, Darling You’re Nothing from last November if you’ve a moment or two. It will be a moment or two well spent.

Dananananaykroyd reminds me of Beachbuggy, and I mean that in the most complimentary way.
