coming soon

02Jun08

There are a couple of release date changes I wanted to share. First, the good news: June 17 will feature not only the Vampire Weekend album, but the new Hold Steady, whose digital street date has been pushed up a month! (Editor’s Note: Uhh, maybe not. The label is now saying this might not be the case. UGH. Will update when we know for sure.)Exciting! Also coming on June 17 will be the new round from eMusic Selects, which will feature some exceptional artists, including some non-indie rock picks! On the bad news front, we found out on Friday that we will not be getting the new Cool Kids record tomorrow after all. Bummers.

EDITED TO FURTHER ADD: Forget the Cool Kids and the maybe-not Hold Steady news. We have the coolest thing ever coming June 10, only to eMusic: a Love Is All covers EP (including covers of Flock of Seagulls, Prince and Dire Straits, and a song from their upcoming album) that will be available only at eMusic, and as a CDR at the band’s shows. Bonus: it is extraordinarily awesome. Save six downloads for this. It is a must!!!

On another note, I was on WNYC’s Soundcheck (a great music-related public radio show) on Friday talking about the ten concerts you should see in NYC this summer. You can download the podcast of my 30-minute appearance from iTunes here. My list of shows can be seen here.

You can also stream the show here:

A month less to wait for “Stay Positive.” Great news! I heard some of the new songs broadcast from the XPN/World Cafe Live show Friday night. I’m looking forward to hearing the album versions. To be honest, I’m hoping I like the album versions a lot more.

I really appreciate the release date updates. Even when an album is pushed back – it’s a lot easier to take when I am aware ahead of time.

I’m pumped to see who will be chosen for the next round of Emu Selects! And on a side note, am I the only one who just doesn’t “get” Vampire Weekend? They have all the elements that I should really dig, but they annoy the hell out of me.

Has the Cool Kids been pushed back, or is it not coming to emusic at all?

  4. 4 yancey

we don’t know for sure with the cool kids. for now, plan on it not coming, but we’re still talking to the label.

I’m also excited about the next round of eMusic Selects. Non-indie-rock picks! Awesomeness! :o )

Amazon has the “Daptone 7 inch Single Collection volume 2″ compilation slated for release on Tuesday. Is it coming to eMusic as well? There’s a Sharon Jones version of “I Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Is In” on it that sounds pretty good. I know eMusic usually gets the Daptone stuff

    I believe it is, dlmiter.

Any date for the Kompakt stuff and the Southern Lord back catalog?

  9. 9 yancey

kompakt = still up in the air. southern lord = next week or thereabouts.

  10. 10 Shaun

    What about Aimee Mann tomorrow?

  11. 11 porieux

Still hoping the new Booka Shade is going to show up.

  12. 12 yancey

the booka shade will show. i will check on that for you.

and no to aimee mann, shaun. her label took down most of its catalogue recently.

  13. 13 Shaun

    Dammit. Thanks Yancey!

  14. 14 Greg

southern lord! woo! time for a booster pack…

anything on the new Spiritualized? was last week’s dropping of A&E a mistake? or will it be here again?

  15. 15 yancey

spiritualized will return. i am not sure when, however.

  16. 16 porieux

    Thanks Yancey!

I’m definitely excited about the Southern Lord stuff as well, and curious to check out Kompakt though I don’t know much about the latter.

Do you know why The National’s “Virginia EP” isn’t on eMusic? It came out a couple of weeks ago and is on iTunes. All their other Beggars stuff is there.

  18. 18 qwynwyn

dang! yancey must be getting tired of answering these new releases questions. :o )

Tim, Beggars is on a delayed-release plan in the US. (I think that’s what Yancey is going to say). Typical waiting period is 3 months, I believe.

Hey ptolemyclark I also don’t get vampire weekend. All my friends like vampire weekend, people have requested it, people have played it at me, still don’t get it. For a while I thought it would be like the Cloud Room which I didn’t get at first but then came around on hard (I think I didn’t get it at first because they were using it in a Pepsi commercial in Korea and once you have heard the refrain from Hey Hey Now about seven thousand times in succession you kind of want to kill an Indie Pepsi drinker).

I am, however, excited about the Love is All. That should be good stuff.

  20. 20 ptolemyclark

SaraDevil, I love you’re phrasing of “played it at me”! :) Nice to see I’m not alone. ;)

“Hey ptolemyclark I also don’t get vampire weekend.”

Me, either. I like the idea behind VW, but the songs haven’t connected with me. Admittedly, I haven’t given them enough of a chance, but there it is.

@ptolemyclark, Sara Devil & Daniel, Esq.

I too was the same with VW. I ignored them solely on the hype and a comparison with Talking Heads – No one is as good as Talking Heads. I REPEAT, NO ONE.

Then a good musically influential friend raved about them and I decided to dip my toe and was still left cold. I mean, it seems like they were trying too hard. But I persisted and I do like the album a lot. I can see what people were talking about; still no Talking Heads for me but loads of Paul Simon Graceland and Police influences in there. But I can certainly understand your feelings guys with them.

  23. 23 SaraDevil

Maybe that’s it. I don’t get Paul Simon either. :)

  24. 24 Adamm

Maybe Vampire Weekend should hire Art Garfunkel.

  25. 25 ptolemyclark

Art Garfunkel was fantastic in the film version of Catch-22.
