mutek!

After the madness of Detroit that I outlined here, I will be heading back to New York. To go to Montreal. I’m not going to question the airlines on this one, as long as they get me to Mutek on time.
Like the DEMF post, I wanted to post some stuff that I’m looking forward to – as much for me, to cheat when I inevitably forget!, as for you. Here goes:
On Wednesday and Thursday, I’m really excited to finally get to check out Murcof and Rechzentrum. The former makes stunning experimental electronic music out of samples from modern classical music that are incredibly moody and affecting. (Utopia is my fave.) Rechzentrum are also experimental, but they do some amazing things with video, so I’m wondering what they might have in store for this particular performance. Far be it for me to recommend you get music outside of eMusic, but if you like their stuff, you do owe it to yourself to get the entire experience. Although I do find Silence to work just as well on its own.
Friday sees an absolutely awesome “post-guitar” line-up of Fennesz, Ben Frost, Tim Hecker. Their work is pretty much brilliant, as far as I’m concerned. Andy Beta once wrote that “within its abstract waves and turbid depths lie submerged emotions” about Hecker’s Harmony In Ultraviolet. I think that’s about as good a description as any for what makes this type of music so special.
Saturday is the moment I’ve been waiting for for months: The Field. Live. I have no idea how he’s going to pull the hypnotic trance of From Here We Go Sublime off – and I’m actually fearing the worst – but I’m eager to find out if, indeed, we can go sublime.
Last, but certainly not least, is Sunday’s headliner Noze. I’ve mentioned them on 17 Dots before, but if you’re not already familiar with their new album, Songs on the Rocks, go to this page and download “Remember Love.” Trust me. It might just change your life. (A little bit.)

Montreal is a fantastic city. The jazz festival there is amazing as well.
