event horizon

15May08

Typically the summer is a slow stretch for new releases on eMusic, as the indies quiet down with college radio on hiatus and the blockbuster-type stuff takes over. Summer = catching up on your save for later lists. However, this summer is looking a whole lot different. I want to give you a quick sketch of the stuff coming up in the next month or two, and if you don’t get excited I dunno what to tell you. For instance, there is:

Kompakt — We talked to them yesterday, and it should be up at the end of May. This will not be the entire catalogue to start; it’s going to be coming in phases.

Liz Phair — The big reissue of Exile in Guyville in June.

Santogold — The album, coming in the next couple of weeks.

Southern Lord — The entire back catalogue, including the new Boris record!

Also new releases by My Morning Jacket, the Hold Steady, John Mellencamp, this band called Au who are incredible and on and on. Some seriously amazing stuff.

One final note: the next round of Selects was scheduled to go live in a week or two, but we’ve pushed it back to mid June. We want to get this next round perfect, and that extra couple of weeks is gonna help. We’re really hyped about these next artists.

Anyway, let’s get excited, everyone!

Great news. It looks like 2008 will be middle/back-loaded with quality new releases (and obv., the Kompakt stuff and other surprise material — e.g., Exile in Guyville — is wonderful). I’ve been keeping a running tab of new discs on the horizon. I don’t know if eMusic will have all of these, but there are supposed to be new discs out later this year from Girl Talk, Sparks, Serena-Maneesh, Lindstrom, Ellen Allien, and the Twilight Sad, among others.

Great news about Southern Lord. Every month, I check its emusic page in the hopes that new stuff has shown up, even if I’m sure it hasn’t.

  3. 3 porieux

Southern Lord is adding the rest of their back catalogue? That is just so full of win.

  4. 4 Mr B

Is that Santogold album and Liz available in the UK?
Exile in Guyville is great news. My vinyl copy just doesn’t get played as much.

  5. 5 yancey

Mr. B, not sure of UK-ness of it. I know it’s available in the EU. I will try to find out.

  6. 6 DJ Adequate

Southern Lord catching up is epic. I’ll have to start saving up for bonus packs.

Summer and Slow Sludgy Doom Metal–what could go better together.

  7. 7 Alex

I am sooo excited about Kompakt! And I really hope y’all get the Lindstrom album too!

  8. 8 qwynwyn

Southern Lord back catalog? very interesting. I know 68 will be very happy. I’m looking forward to the Kompakt releases.

  9. 9 anna

Mr B - so sorry, but we’re without Santogold. It may magically pop up, but I wouldn’t be too hopeful.

  10. 10 joe

I’ve been brutalizing my brain on these Southern Lord titles since yesterday afternoon. Not a disappointment in the lot.

  11. 11 todd

while we’re here and just as a heads up for interested parties: we will not be getting the upcoming gas titles anytime soon from kompakt. but we WILL be getting lots of awesome stuff that i’m pretty excited about. mainly b/c i was lucky enough to handpick a lot of it. have i mentioned lately how much i love my job?

  12. 12 skerzo

So what is the UK-ness of the kompakt and Southern lord stuff guys? (crosses fingers!…)

  13. 13 dlimiter

The Kompakt stuff is great, but I’d also really like to see some of the old Mike Ink stuff if you guys ever get the chance to pick it up. Tracks like Playtex, Dadajack, M:i:5 - Autogen, and the like would be great. I’ve got them on Kreisel 99 7″s, but the sound quality is pretty poor.

  14. 14 Amanda

I am interested, tho I confess not excited, only in the Mellencamp, just because it is produced by T-Bone Burnett.

His website has info on this new “audio technology that creates high-definition audio files that are virtually indistinguishable from the original master tapes” and whatnot, audiophiles will have to tell me if that is all just blather or something significant.

  15. 15 ptolemyclark

I’m a little excited for the Guyville reissue. :)

  16. 16 ptolemyclark

Daniel–I’ve heard the new Twilight Sad e.p. …and it’s very very good!

  17. 17 MiDoJo

Nice a New Twilight Sad (Hopefully eMu will get it)

The AU album (or the part I heard on All Songs Considered) is really good. Go ahead and Check out their other stuff already on eMusic

  18. 18 Daniel, Esq.

ptolemyclark: Is it like the debut (indie U2-ish stadium anthems), or do they go in a different direction?

  19. 19 yancey

skerzo, kompakt i am 90% sure is worldwide. southern lord will be whatever it is now, i believe.

  20. 20 WJPurdy

Todd, this may be a bit out of line, but what, exactly, is the process for getting (part of) a label’s catalog on eMu? In Kompakt’s case, did they send you a catalog, tell you you could pick 40 (or whatever) titles to put on the site & we’ll see what happens after that? I’m especially curious because it appears in Kompakt’s case what gets to the site has been largely left up to your taste (not that that’s a bad thing at all — you’ve recommended a dozen awesome titles here I would never have listened to otherwise — just a surprising thing).

  21. 21 Alex

Any chance that eMusic will get the Feedelity/Smalltown Supersound off-shoot label Stromland? I ask cos Dominique Leone’s album comes out next week and I’m trying to determine if I need to go to a store or if I should be sure to save the appropriate number of downloads for release day?

  22. 22 ptolemyclark

Daniel–The new TS is a slightly different direction…for instance, the new version of “And She Would Darken the Memory” is slowed down and musically, uh, nearly drone. More strings and feedback, less drums. Same with the fantastic new version of “Walking for Two Hours.” A bit darker than the debut, and rather crushing.
Honestly, I think I like it better than the debut. It’s that good.

  23. 23 Sean Ross

Kompakt and Southern Lord? You guys are incredible…albums that were always out of reach will soon be in my collection. THANK YOU!

Side Note: Any news on the two new comps from Soundway, that seem to be continuations on the recent/brilliant “Nigeria Special: Modern Highlife, Afro-sounds & Nigerian Blues 1970-76″

Re: Soundway comps. I’m trying to find out. I have both of them myself, and they are amazing, especially Nigeria Rock Special. Also, we don’t have it, but this comp just came out on the Analog Africa label called African Scream Contest and it’s pretty exceptional. The label’s blog is here and has some info. I’m hoping they put out the 2LP version soon.

  25. 25 Daniel, Esq.

I so hope we get the other two Soundway comps. This sounds like something I’d read on a different message-board-to-remain-nameless, but Nigerian 70s funk is so hot now.

Joe, what do you think of the Nigeria 70 — Lagos Jump comp that just appeared here?

    http://www.emusic.com/album/Various-Artists-Nigeria-70-Lagos-Jump-MP3-Download/11211353.html

  26. 26 joe

I have only listened to that comp twice, but both times I thought it was awesome. I need to spend more time with it.

  27. 27 Amanda

Thanks Joe, I finally found a Sydney record shop that has heard of African Scream Contest and have ordered it. I look forward to hearing it in 2-4 weeks!

  28. 28 joe

Right on! You’ll love it. The liner notes, too, are pretty spectacular.

  29. 29 Sean Ross

Thanks for the update on the Soundway comps and the African Scream/Lagos comp recommendations, just picked them both up…excellent!

  30. 30 joe

Awesome! Yeah, I’m just back from a looooong drive from DC (thanks, traffic!), powered solely by those four records.

  31. 31 joe

Hey! I just got confirmations — we will be getting the other 2 NIgeria Special comps, along with the Panama! comp SoundWay put out a year or so ago. If we end up getting all the SoundWay stuff, well, brace yourselves! No word on when yet.

  32. 32 Daniel, Esq.

EXCELLENT! Thanks for the update, Joe. Getting that Panama! comp is also a coup.

  33. 33 Lee

Great news about the Soundway comps.

Also, with the addition of David Murray’s DIW catalog, any chance we’ll see more from DIW, like John Zorn’s Masada studio albums?

  34. 34 Daniel, Esq.

Sincerely sorry to be a pest. Just wondering, are you still expecting the first wave of Kompakt title to hit the site at the end of May (i.e., tomorrow or Saturday)?

  35. 35 yancey

nope. got delayed again. but according to kompakt, we aren’t more than a week or two away.

  36. 36 Daniel, Esq.

No problem, obv. I was frankly just wondering when I should redeem some of my Circuit City booster cards (which I’ll do so around the time when Kompakt goes live).

Again, thanks for the quick response. You guys are awesome.
