na: noze

26Apr08

The excellent new Noze album hit the site today. If the thought of Tom Waits making house music makes you smile from ear to ear, this one is for you.

Impossible, you say? Take a quick listen to…well…just about everything on Songs on the Rocks. As Garry Mullholland explains in his forthcoming eMusic review:

You could argue that the waltz-time “You Have To Dance,” with its junkyard percussion, Dixieland clarinet and Marc Ribot-style guitar, wears its Waitsian influences a little too proudly on its whisky-soaked sleeve, and it sets the tone for much of the rest of the album, including “Childhood Blues” (Waits goes acid house), “You Have to Dance” (Waits goes ska-house) and “Slum Girl” (Waits goes Isaac Hayes). Nevertheless, “Slum Girl”’s epic arrangement – all stabbing brass and huge, sinister strings – exemplifies both the grand ambition and the come-hither humour of Nôze’s muse.

Add “Remember Love,” eMusic Electronic columnist Philip Sherburne’s DJ set closer for a while in 2007, and you’ve got yourself one of those numerous contenders for “album of the year.”

Assuming 17dots stays functional long enough for a proper “na:” post this week, I’ll bet this will eventually be noted officially. South (both bands called South are confusingly referred to as “South (2)” on eMu.. I’m referring here to the British one) has a new release, You Are Here,” available via eMusic.

I am already a fan (saw one of their Pianos shows 6 weeks or so ago, along with 30 or so of my closest friends; I own all their CDs, etc.), so I suppose I am a bit biased… but it’s a pretty good album (despite middling reviews), especially if you’re a fan of epic Britpop a la Doves, Elbow, etc.

In other electronic news, Quiet Village’s new record, Silent Movie is on the site. I haven’t heard every song since I’m waiting to buy it on vinyl, but some of those tracks are unstoppable. Now they need to collect all of their remixes on one CD and make that available too!

from the eMusic review: a disco Gogol Bordello. OK, I’m intrigued. The album is saved for later.
