Ladyhawke is my most recent musical crush – I’ve known and loved her for about a week. After Friday’s disappointing through-a-window-darkly Ladyhawke experience, I was determined to see her properly, even though that meant squishing into the painfully overcrowded Cubana - crutches, gammy ankle and all. Ladyhawke, aka New Zealander Pip Brown, sounds like a ‘Rumours’- era Fleetwood Mac with a thoroughly modern fluro tinge. She looks more scared than her balls out singing would have had me believe, but the full set of songs delivers on the promise made by her MySpace. She’s an album due out on Modular this summer. I hope hope hope it ends up on eMusic.

Thecockandbullkid – Another rising star. Anita Blay, 22, sounds very much like the non-single tracks on Kate Bush’s ‘Hounds of Love,’ the parts where the sounds come at you sideways and everything gets faintly mental, but sung by a streetwise London girl. Impressive so far.

Ida Maria - Ida has a truly lovely voice. Scandinavian vocalists seem to be in fashion at the moment – but the Nordic accents lend themselves well to expressing emotion; all arching a-sounds and faintly pouting sibilants. It gives her a slight air of innocence, which she shatters utterly with a raucous laugh when introducing the shout-along ‘Better When You’re Naked.’ Ida’s version of indie pop is a hyperactive one, but not without its sweetness. She’s compelling onstage, quirkily beautiful and her song writing is tight, sharp and fun.

She already win my attention just with her name, it’s my all-time favorite movie, so i’ll surely look for her album.
