I’ve been a little harsh towards Tangerine Dream in the past: “stupid hippy nonesense” would be one the politer phrases I’ve used to describe them. However, in conversation today with my Secret Krautrock Source I was informed that not only had two hard-to-find krautrock classics arrived on eMusic, but they were by Tangerine Dream and I would like them.

The two tracks are ‘Ultima Thule Part 1′ and ‘Ultima Thule Part 2′ from ‘The Electronic Magic Of Tangerine Dream - The Anthology.’ “Part 2 is so hard to get hold of even I haven’t got a copy!” said my Secret Krautrock Source, a man with enough music to never hear the same track twice in over a year of continuous listening.

I listened to the tracks. And although I did wince at the stupid hippy nonsense names, they were wonderful. Wonderful, grandiose pieces of woozy, towering psychedelia. So now I like at least some Tangerine Dream. Are there no certainties left in this crazy world we live in?

One of my previous jobs in Los Angeles was actually working as an “Office Manager” for a certain former Tangerine Dream keyboardist.

Sadly, he was not the coolest guy.

weird! i wouldn’t classify that stuff even in the top third of TDream. well, here’s hoping we get more - i didn’t even know there was *some*…those live albums look pretty good, though.

addendum to patrick: there are many former TDream keyboardists. ;)

Try White Eagle. There are some clever segues between tracks and I rate it as one of their better ones. The only other albumn I have is Phaedra and i don’t listen to it that much. I think it pushed the boundaries of synthesiser music though and was a pioneering album.
