lists: a tribute
Yancey’s post on Comments got me thinking about different features on our site and what I use the most. And I’d have to say more then anything else, especially lately, I’ve been spending a great deal of time checking out user playlists. Anytime I feel like I think I’ve found pretty much everything there is on the site that I would like, I stumble across someone’s collection of albums that I most likely would have never thought to look for. I’ve found some really incredible albums on here that may have fallen through the cracks otherwise if someone hadn’t pointed me in their direction.
And so of course, I made a list.
Here are some of my favorite records I’ve found from looking at user playlists:
Ogurusu Norihide – Modern
Pauline Oliveros – Ghost Dance
Takagi Masakatsu – Journal For People
The Homosexuals – Astral Glamour
Burning Star Core – Operator Dead…Post Abandoned
Rarities of Piano Music 1999 – Live Recordings from the Husum Festival
Bird Names – Wooden Lake / Sexual Diner
Pietro Grossi – Battimenti
Hauschka – Substantial
All of the Éthiopiques
Gruppo Di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza – Musica Su Schemi
Talibam! – Ordination of the Globetrotting Conscripts
Badgerlore – We Are All Hopeful Farmers, We Are All Scared Rabbits
Metallic Falcons – Desert Doughnuts (thanks John Darnielle…)
Various Artists – Melatonin
Mountains – Mountains
Hildur Gudnadottir, BJ Nilsen and Stilluppsteypa – Second Childhood
Anyone else have a list? Any kind’ll do.
Sujan, I hear you have a pretty cool list somewhere…

See, now I gotta discover some of this from yr list. I had no idea eMusic had all the Ethiopiques either! Nice post, man…
Sujan’s list rules!
That Homosexuals album is UNBELIEVABLE.
Lists are great – but it’d be great if you guys could drag them out of the previous century by enabling us to move stuff between lists etc?
go on….. pleeeease?
Never heard any of ‘em. Here we go……..
Not that i can actully sample anything. i run windows mp11 and it can’t find emusic’s server. any ideas anyone?

No one has a list to share?…
I don’t have a similar list to share. I don’t actually use the list function very much (or at least I don’t recall doing so). I get enough albums to work from through subscribers, eMu staff, boomkat, npr, etc.
The Ethiopiques series is awesome; #4 (slinky, smoky jazz) and #8 (James Brown funk, Ethiopian style) are my favorites.
I find a lot of good stuff either from playlists or from ’so-and-so also liked’ references, including:
The Budos Band
Dengue Fever
Booniay! (African funk compilation)
Thai Beat-a-Go-Go
Teen Dance Music from China and Malaysia
