I’ve been listening to a lot of old favorites lately, skipping through some upcoming stuff, not sticking to any one thing. But one record I’ve really been liking is She & Him, the upcoming album from actress Zooey Dechannel (Elf, Almost Famous) and M. Ward. Volume 1 (Merge) is a totally solid ’70s-style country record that’s cheery, playful and very, very huggable. The first three songs are my favorites, and you can hear “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?” over at Brooklyn Vegan.

One other thing to point out: the much-ballyhooed (and deservedly so) Santogold, a Brooklyn-based singer who’s part M.I.A./part Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It’s unclear whether we’ll get her record in April (it’s on Downtown Records: we have some of their catalogue), but we do have her first band, Stiffed, a competent but not very exciting pop-punk band. The more you know.

So we’ll get She & Him? I think M.Ward works better in collaboration than on his own, e.g., him with Neko Case or him with the lead singer from MMJ. Ward’s Transfiguration of Vincent was great, but the follow-ups have been — to me — tedious and uninvolving genre exercises (especially his last one), and I like the genre in which he works.

I previewed those songs over at Brooklyn Vegan, and though I though they were pleasant, I’d hardly consider them jaw-dropping. The problem is that ZD’s vocal range is sort of limited. That’s not a problem for me with most singers, but in this case, that range is pretty much exactly her dialog range on film. I can’t hear these songs without picturing in my head, for example, her advice to a young Cameron Crowe in Almost Famous, or more recently her turn as DG in Sci Fi’s unfortunately misguided update ot The Wizard of Oz.

I like both Him and She, though, and I will probably be DLing it come 3/18.

Yeah, but will emusic be getting the Scarlett Johannson album of Tom Waits covers? That’s the more important question.
