A neat little live show from prime-era Durutti Column hit the site today.
Yes, we don’t have The Return… or LC, so this may be the closest you’ll get to DC’s best work on eMusic unfortunately. But to hear Vini Reilly’s ever-recognizable trembling guitar tone even with Bruce Mitchell’s drums a little bit louder than usual is a joy to hear. Joe and I briefly talked about DC today and he made mention of the fact that all of this solo guitar and drum interplay starts to sound the same after a while. I’d agree with that to a certain extent, but I also think that it’s sort of the point. Reilly, for me at least, holds more in common with ambient artists that seek to create a coherent mood over long stretches of time. While much of the stuff on Live In Bruxelles 13.8.1981 is less than four minutes, I can’t help but be drawn into the feel once again. By the time he unleashes a Kraut-y eight-minute version of “The Missing Boy,” I’m ready to float along with this stuff just about anywhere he wants to go.
One last thing: There’s an interesting interview included in which Reilly talks about, among other things, the soundsystem he just performed on.

excellent! i think that the power of DC really comes through much more live. the albums are great, sure, but the live shows have a lot more oomph and dynamics (eliminating some of the sameness you mention).
there’s good DC up on emusic, of course, just recent. i thought rebellion and tempus fugit were as good as the early stuff, just…different.
