growing, flying, liking
Two records came in last week from Brooklyn bands that I kinda dismissively skimmed before, but have been really liking the past few days: Lateral by Growing and Flying Faces of the Night by Flying. First thing you need to know is that both band names can either be gerunds or participles. Which is key. Really though, Growing is nice’n'drony ambient that reminds me of Gas and recent Black Dice and all of that good stuff. At four tracks, it’s a friendly, contemplative lil’ EP. Flying is soft’n'sloppy indie that reminds me of Microphones and maybe CocoRosie and there’s this one-two punch on the album that just kills me, which is “Draw It in the Dark” (a dying fairy singing over Jon Brion’s Eternal Sunshine score) and then “Firetruck” (reminds me of Silkworm a little bit). Neither record is amazing, but both are good and friendly, passing fancies I’d be willing to drop some cash on. How ’bout you?

Hate to play the grammar nazi, but the bands’ names can be either gerunds or participles, not infinitives.
YES! You are right. I love grammar nazis.
oooh, that growing EP is excellent. as the germans would say, TIP!.
though now i’m left with two downloads until i reset in a few days. you guys should start a recurring column of “good releases that only use up a few downloads”.
So am I to believe that gerunds are the flavor of the month?
Huh, look – free live Growing EP today. Haven’t listened to it yet.
