I’ve been listening to a decent amount of classic dance music lately, including the awesome Clone Classic Cuts compilation, which I’m hoping we’ll eventually get on the site. Until that time, though, there’s enough new producers aping old sounds to keep you sated. In fact, one of them dropped just the other day.
Kink and Neville Watson’s “Inside Out” is Chicago acid par excellence, seriously on level with some of the excellent records created by the Trax crew or even Mr. Fingers. The thing that I love about this music is how unrelentingly spare it is: the acid line is almost responsible for all of the melodic content here, twisting in on itself like a DNA strand, and when the track breaks down it goes crazy — spasming uncontrollably, spurting every which way. There’s not a lot that differentiates these tracks sometimes, but when it works, there’s nothing like it.
