Emmy The Great has been pleasing me in a quiet, understated way for almost a year now. London girl Emmy, real name Emma-Lee Moss, makes wonderfully delicate indie-folk, but never really stumbles over the twee-line. She’s supported Martha Wainwright and Kimya Dawson and if you’re fan of either of them then you’ll probably find Emmy to be great too.

[Note - Whilst looking for a clip of Emmy to share with you all, I found this video, which turns out to have been made by a friend of mine. I had no idea he'd done it until I recognised the other girl in the clip.]

It is 2008 and 40 years since the “Summer of Love” and it seems style and fashion always seems to go in a circle. We are seeing a lot popular songs and artist that are reminiscent of the 60’s folk revival. One artist is “Emmy the Great” born Emma-Lee Moss in Hong Kong but raised in London. She is becoming the toast of the town on NY’s lower east side. She grew out of London’s uber-hip anti-folk scene and is currently an unsigned sensation. She uses plain words laced with raw emotion to deliver her message. Her amazing voice and coffeehouse sound is so simple, yet so hip that it sends all those cheesy 80s punk sounds back to Jurassic Park were they belong.
I think it sends a message to all the formula and pseudo rock that they call music. It drops a bomb on the commercialized acts that lip synch and sample and yet get away with calling it art. Her music to me is really a breath of fresh air to listen to. I’m so tired of all the sex laced, dark heroin overtures of the 70s and 80s Guitar heroes or the wannabe spice-girl, boy bands, of the 90s. The genius of her music is its simplicity it makes my brain relax. Her songs and videos are an experesion of artistic clarity that suggest subliminally her girl-centric way of life. In her video “Gabriel” she writes about the break up with a boy in her no-tech room. I think she is sending a message about technology and how it has invading and complicating our lives. In this video she writes in her diary with pencils and everything is so neat and tidy showing her Asian roots. Her lyrics do have a hint of a punk influence, like when she writes about having to use the ladies room whenever she thinks of this guy she likes but mainly her words are direct and unassuming. She writes about simple things in her life like a cute guy on myspace called Gabriel or getting married. Her wholesome image is so antiestablishment and a far cry from today’s popular artists that conform by trying too hard not to conform. Her clothes are modest with just the right amount of fascism. She wears plain shoes, tights, and skirts below the knee. Her hair is pulled back in a barrette or headband and to me this is so conservatively smart that it’s seductive. A beautiful young girl with an acoustical guitar and an amazing voice who’s sobering lyrics reflect what is real, like a young Joni Mitchell. She is so low-key and delicate that she’s like a hypnotic drug that charms the mind. .is that to me it is the pinnacle of human musical evolution. Her Celtic style singing penetrates your soul as her gorgeous voice soars like a bird.
