An early hype FYI: on February 19 there’s this record coming out by a band called Atlas Sound who I had never heard of until today, when Joe, Todd and I took a listen. The first song sounds like Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians and the second song, called “Recent Bedroom,” is total knock-yr-sox-off transfixing dream-pop/drone heaven. So good, and I’m normally a skeptic on this stuff. The rest can’t quite match that promise, but it is still very good (reminds me of the sad Broken Social Scene songs that sound like the Smashing Pumpkins, like “Stars & Sons“). Anyway, later on I learn that the band is actually Bradford Cox of Deerhunter fame, which is good news because that means people might actually pay attention to it. Consider yrself told!
Thanks for the link to that version of M418M. It’s one of my favorite pieces, and I’ve always wondered what it would sound like if someone “normal” tried to tackle it.
