Yesterday, when I saw three Voice Of The Beehive albums hit the site I gave an audible yelp of joy, (the rest of eMusic Europe thought I was choking on my tea.) I used to adore Voice of the Beehive. I loved that their accessible pop was crunched up with big guitars. I played my cassette copy of Honey Lingers until the tape stretched. I thought that they, along with Katie Puckrik from The Word, were the coolest women in the world and I wanted to be just like them. I was also 12 years old.

And at the age of 12 I also thought Six from Blossom was a viable style icon and that one day Christian Slater would be mine, oh yes. My judgment was obviously a little off at the time, so yesterday I thought I’d give VOB another listen before gushing about them here.

And, yes, I still like them. The production is a little thin by today’s standards and some other aspects are a little dated, not least the vocal style, but they still make my heart soar. Problem is, I can’t tell if this is nostalgia, or because they are a great guitar pop band. Four other eMusic users have already given them four stars or more, so I thought I’d let you guys know and leave it up to your ears.

(If you do like them, I also suggest running a Google image search with the following terms: “Christian Slater” AND “Heathers”.)
