flying nuns and more
Some shout-outs to a few records that have been getting heavy play.
Jane Weaver, Seven Day Smile
Other Music recommended her latest record, so I thought I’d give one of her older ones a shot. Its best moments fall squarely within the Bat for Lashes/mystic female pop realm, which is fine by me. Its, um, not-best moments are a little too singer-songwriter for my tastes. Still, though, the good is outweighing the bad so far. Fans of ghostly sounds (see also: Mazzy Star, early solo Kristen Hersh) will probably find a lot here to love.
Try: “Slow Song,” “Starglow”
Ghost Club, Ghostclubbing
This one I’m flat-out crazy about. Junk-ass guitar-heavy indie that reminds me of Thinking Fellers and Joe Christmas and early Sebadoh. They have the ramshackle “we can barely play” aesthetic that I’ve missed so much in indie rock lately. They apparently grew out of the Flying Nun band the 3Ds (which goes a long way to explain why I’m so crazy about them), and their guitarist, Denise Roughan, was in the absolutely terrific Look Blue Go Purple. If you do nothing else, please download “Unterwasser Fotos.” It is all kinds of awesome.
Try: “Unterwasser Fotos,” “Howl of the Duck.”

Dude!
What a spot on the ghostclub!!!
Holy crap its the 3Ds all over again!!!!
According to the credits on Ghostclubbing (which came out in 2001), ex-3D David Mitchell plays the guitar (and sings). Denise Roughan plays drums on most of the tracks. I bought Ghostclubbing in hopes of hearing her sing, because her songs with the 3Ds are my favorites (esp. “Beautiful Things”).
