Wow. How did I miss that eMusic recently got some of the Kitsune catalogue on the site?

Anyone who has been following dance music for the past few years will know Kitsune. They’re part of the New French Touch explosion, a label that specializes in an attitude more than a particular sound. That attitude? Not taking dance music all that seriously. Instead, most of the tracks you’ll find on Kitsune are interested first and foremost in fun. That’s how you get the dirty booty bass of DJ Assault, the warped electro of Joakim and the straitlaced electro-infused disco of Rex the Dog all on one imprint.

My favorites, though? Christopher and Raphael Just’s “Popper,” which again gets the parental warning sticker on the Fox N’ Wolf vocal version but is totally worth it, and Fox N’ Wolf’s delirious, wobbly and catchy pop masterpiece “Youth Alcoholic.” Just try to not to look at that cover. Yuck.

like most of the nu-french-touch, kitsuné is often overrated (said the grumpy old man), especially as they’ve moved away from electronics towards indie rock. but there are some standouts in the catalog. i’ve always dug dieter schmidt’s electro-disco pileup “morse code from the cold war” (shame that emusic doesn’t yet have the simian mobile disco track from the flip, that’s one of my favorite SMD moments ever). ex-outputters volga select (ivan smagghe marc collin) have a nice cold-wavey disco anthem with “transe” as well.

for the record, kitsuné does make some pretty amazing jeans.
