No jazz fans here eh?
I can’t believe !!! only showed up on one list! WTF!!!
It was one of my favorite releases of 2007, and certainly the best live act I saw this year. OK, I only saw two shows this year (I don’t get out much). But still…
Porieux, I love old jazz. But with new jazz releases — like classical — I’ve lost track of whose relevant, what discs are worthwhile, and so forth. Basically, I need guidance on what separates the wheat from the chaffe among this year’s new releases.
That’s my longwinded way of saying I’d welcome a list of the year’s best jazz (and/or classical) discs.
My eMusic (not general) Top 10, as sent to Joe:
Michaelangelo Matos
1. Spoon, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
2. John Prine & Mac Wiseman, Standard Songs For Average People
3. Danuel Tate, Pushcard EP
4. Les Savy Fav, Let’s Stay Friends
5. Kenge Kenge, Introducing Kenge Kenge
6. Gogol Bordello, Super Taranta!
7. Nick Lowe, At My Age
8. Blonde Redhead, 23
9. Caribou, Andorra
10. v/a, 5 Years Get Physical
great year overall; this isn’t my overall Top 10 but it’s a damn good list anyway
for the most part my full list would look like a lot of others here, so here’s a short list of things i didn’t see mentioned elsewhere, in no particular order:
Fred Anderson and Hamid Drake: From the River to the Ocean (2007 Jazz Pick)
Strategy: Future Rock
Akron/Family: Love is Simple
No Age: Weirdo Rippers
Anything and everything from Awesome Tapes From Africa (http://www.awesometapesfromafrica.blogspot.com)

18. Herbie Hancock - River: The Jonie Letters
19. Prefab Sprout - Steve McQueen (Deluxe Edition)
20. Elliott Smith - New Moon
MM, you’re right; the Pushcard EP is amazing. I love the jazzy-improv techno sound of the Wagon Repair label (and to me, this EP is one of the best examples of that sound and aesthetic).
Most (all?) of these are on Emusic:
All Hour Cymbals / Yeasayer (very surprised this hasn’t shown up on more Top 10 lists)
The Flying Club Cup / Beirut
Andorra / Caribou
Night Falls Over Kortedala / Jens Lekman
Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga / Spoon
Ghettoblaster / Socalled
Mice Parade / Mice Parade
From the “Wish I Heard About in 2006″ club:
Night Ripper / Girl Talk
The Dusty Foot Philosopher / K’Naan
Thanks guys - you’re really swelling my SFL lists!
Also, I’m surprised by the lack of Panda Bear mentions considering the praise I seem to remember it getting all those many months ago…
I haven’t done a list just yet but I can chip in with Meg Baird’s ‘Dear companion’ which I haven’t seen on many lists but I’ve been loving this year…
Erm, I hate doing these–it’ll be 2009 (heck, this will be outdated by the end of the month) by the time I’ve surveyed enough of the 2007 stuff to really get close to a best of for the decade…but, these lists certainly are useful for the save for later list…all from emusic, I don’t get stuff any other way…
Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass
Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha
Grinderman - Grinderman (not as good as Lyre of Orpheus, however)
Jens Lenkman - Night Falls Over Kortedala
Los Campensinos! - Sticking Fingers Into Lightsockets (even if it is an EP, it rocks)
Matthew Dear - Asa Breed
O’Death - Head Home
Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
Okkervil River - The Stage Names
Panda Bear - Person Pitch (and I pretty much hate animal collective)
May make the list, jury is still out:
Deerhunter - Fluorescent Grey (EP is better than the LP, which is pretty good in itself)
Yeasayer - All Hour Cymbols
Burial - Untrue
Pole - Steingarten
I’m surprised to see Challengers on so many lists–perhaps I haven’t listened to it enough times, but I haven’t found much I like about it.
