papercuts
Playing regularly these days is Mockingbird, the first record from the Papercuts, a San Francisco group/one-man project lead by Jason Quever. I don’t remember how I stumbled across the album page, but slingshotcatapultspear‘s user review made me curious:
This is a very good album. A grower and a first time glower! Meaning it is pretty good at first, and then gets even better! Seriously, I can’t believe I’m the first to review this thing. I imagine it will get some attention sooner or later…
Allow me to make your prognostication true, Mr. Spear! It’s a very C86 kinda record, the sort of music that normally makes me yawn and bristle. (Joe says if I like this I should try the Aislers Set, but I saw them years ago and didn’t dig it. Perhaps I was wrong.) Anyway, I’m hooked on the first two tracks, “Mockingbird” (androgynous vocals, a big cascading snare roll, melancholy strings) and “Poor and Free” (creates the exact same sensation as Air’s wonderful “Playground Love”; that overused phrase “ethereal” comes to mind). Definitely one for the save for later.
