na: milky disco

One of the most exciting new sounds that has re-emerged this year has been Balearic beat. With Studio, A Mountain of One, Quiet Village, and others plowing the turf of soft-rock goodness, it was only a matter of time before a label decided to take the best of crop and present it to audiences. Milky Disco isn’t that compilation. But it comes close.

Milky Disco comes courtesy the Lo label, which explains the disco fetish (they’re the ones responsible for returning ye olde Black Devil Disco Club to prominence). Daniel Wang and Jersey Devil Social Club of Environ both make appearances, as well as Nordic disco snow queen of the moment, Sally Shapiro who adds a pleasantly off-key vocal to a cover of Charlie’s “Spacer Woman.”

The best stuff for my money is the milky end of things at the end of the record, where the aforementioned Studio get to stretch out for almost 13 minutes and amaze you with their uncanny ability to bring in a striking new element right at the moment that you think you’re about to get bored with the groove. Also starring here is Quiet Village with “Desperate Hours.” I read an interview with Joel Martin from the group yesterday which seems to indicate that the track is actually a remix of Manuel Goettsching’s epic, seminal and all-around awesome “E2-E4.” “Desperate Hours” is all those things (aside from seminal, I suppose…so far!) and more.

Great post! I love this year’s Balearic revival. I’d really appreciate a post summarizing the best of what eMusic has to offer in this new genre (this post covers some of it, but I know there’s other Balearic artists on eMusic, and there’s a ton of possibly less interesting stuff here that’s labelled Balearic music, e.g., all the “Ibiza comps”).

Most importantly, will A Mountain of One’s debut disc be available on eMusic? I’ve been looking forward to it, and I think it was released in late September. Thanks.
