Not a Tuesday to write home about…
Jefferson Airplane, Live at the Monterey Festival: Excellent performance and sound quality on this one, so good I’d immediately file it just behind Creedence with the best classic rock on the site.
Joni Mitchell, Shine: Reviews are very mixed on Joni’s latest. People are torn between hi it’s Joni Mitchell! and hi it’s not a good record! Your opinion on this one will come down to your level of fandom. I like her ’70s stuff plenty, but I really do not like Shine.
Mum, Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy: Never got into, and don’t plan on starting. Pitchfork panned it, but eMusic’s Derek Miller calls it “an album that finds múm both restricting their music while creating those lofty moodpieces we’ve come to expect.”
Office, A Night at the Ritz: I like this record quite a bit. Very Weezer, just straight pop-punk/power-pop stuff. Good songs.
KRS One & MC Shan, The Battle for Rap Supremacy: Compilation of classic hip-hop battle tracks. Joe is buzzing about this one.
Tiny Masters of Today, Bang Bang Boom Cake: Russell Simins (Blues Explosion) aided band featuring a 13-year-old and an 11-year-old with guest appearances by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, among many others.
Asobi Seksu, Stay Awake: New single, with a not-so-hot cover of “Then He Kissed Me.”

Yancey (and the rest of you 17dotters) definitely check out Sunparlour Players. Hymns for the Happy is a slightly remastered re-release from the group. Passionate vocals, fabulous energy, eloquent lyrics — these Canadians can really rock that rootsy americana folk! I’m sure this album will be grabbing critics and bloggers alike by the short ‘n curlies, making their presence known.
Some great quotes from their site that perfectly describe their music:
“…AC/DC guest starring on Little House on The Prairie…”
“…chaotic, and stomping on the line between breakdown and bliss…”
“Picture a rabid tractor screaming down towards a tent revival.”
My favorites: Pacifists Anthem, If the Creeks Don’t Rise, The Detroit River is Alive, Talk It To Death
Give them a listen — I’m sure many of you eMuers will fall for this band.
No Dethklok, eh?
eesh! sorry for my icky linking!
Lafayette by Erin McKeown is out today. It’s her sixth album I think. Diverse, intimate, killer performances recorded live at Joe’s Pub in NYC in early 2007. I just wrote home about it. Seriously, I did.
A new matador release came out today as well.
The Cave Singers - Invitation Songs.
There is a free single that has been up for a little while, but now the entire album is up for grabs, so get to grabbing people.

from the one that hurts ya, and loves ya.
tape collector tooth how sand.
I just don’t get the excitement about Asobi Seksu. Heard both albums, seen ‘em, (hell, opened for ‘em) and I just don’t get it.
Not much to write about? Wait a minnit — what about this?

Two thirds of McLusky, and every bit as aggressive, frazzled and funny as their old band.
As usual you guys missed all the best stuff.
Charlie Hunter, Bobby Previte, & John Medeski - Altitude
Rob Sonic - Sabotage Gigante
Nickodemus - Endangered Species remixed
Living Legends
Gilles Peterson Digs America Vol.2
Nuclear Blast All Stars - Out of the Dark
Let’s get with the PG!
I’m agreeing with jonderneathica with the new Future Of The Left. It’s great stuff, especially if you were a fan of Mclusky. And I’d also like to say that the new Mum is good. But like Yancey said, I guess I can’t like it because the Almighty Pitchfork said I shouldn’t.
yeah i’m curious about the future of the left record. i downloaded today and listened a little, but wanted to digest a bit more before i wrote about it. not sure how i feel so far (i wasn’t a big mclusky fan).
as for mum, stephen, what pitchfork thinks is merely context. i’ve always been agnostic on them, but i know that they mean a lot to many people (including many of my friends).
New Devendra Banhart is on here too, right after I bought that sucker. Oh well.
Two great old shoegazer albums showed up this week:
The Boo Radleys “Everything’s Alright Forever”
Not one of the better-known groups on the scene, but this 1992(?) album is great. You can’t escape the My Bloody Valentine influence, and some of the woozy guitars sound kind of dated today, but the songs are full of great hooks and energy.

Slowdive “Just For A Day”
Their weakest (and first) album, but still pretty good blissed-out stuff, especially “Catch The Breeze”.

Also, the new album by The Decoration. I haven’t heard it yet, but I really liked their earlier album “Quiet Songs For Hot Weather” (released back when the band were called Pinq.)

And I never quite got the point of His Name Is Alive, but they have some rabid fans, and their new album came out this week:
