Recent electronic arrivals, reviewed!
Lindstrom – The Contemporary Fix
We already have a version of The Contemporary Fix on the site, but this one includes two more remixes. One by Eye of the Boredoms, which is predictably amazing and drum-heavy, and one by Bjorn Torske, who slows it down and drags the groove out even longer than Lindstrom did in the original. Both are excellent.
Gus Gus – Attention
The famed Icelandic group once had 12 members, but for this fourth album their numbers were down to four. Predictably, the sound is a bit less dense, the groove a bit stronger. Basically, this is electronic pop with a house backbeat. “David” and “Dance You Down” are pretty awesome, but I can take or leave much of the rest.
DJ T - The Dawn Remixes
Did the excellent Dawn single need two remixes? Especially one that tips its hand in the title (DJ T.’s Re-Heated Mix)? I actually the Woody mix – it’s a bit more cosmic than the brittle original version, but it loses that gorgeous reveal of the melody so…
Wahoo – Take It Personal
DJ Dixon is one of the hottest German DJ’s around right now, having just come of a beautiful mix for Get Physical (Body Language, Vol. 4) and a soon-to-be-if-it’s-not-already legendary podcast for Resident Advisor. This collaboration with Georg Levin takes his smooth tendencies to frightening levels, though. More adult contemporary pop than hip house, this extremely well-produced and extremely lightone is for serious pop music connoisseurs only. (”Moonride” sounds weirdly like the Black Eyed Peas!?!?)
Tussle – Warning
This Smalltown Supersound dance rock gets remixed by some of the best here, including Hot Chip, Twitch and Dennis Young. My favorite thus far is Twitch’s, which is very tribal sounding perhaps, er, aping that currently hip “Jungle River Cruise,” “Safari,” etc. trend.
