the double u

Don’t you just love happy coincidences? While researching a label for a future 17 Dots post, I came across something that I’d never seen before, downloaded it and have been listening to it all day.

The perpetrator in this case is the Double U, a Frenchman with a penchant for toytronic compositions of brittle percussion, tiny looped snippets of sound and gorgeously slight melodies. Franck Rabeyrolles, the man behind both U’s, has the tired voice of a folktronicist, but it matches up perfectly with his miniature confections.

My favorite of the album I’ve been spinning all day (A Bottle In a Sea) is “Decide,” which picks up the pace to a slow crawl and pairs a sequenced synth with a rickety click-hop beat and acoustic that keeps it all together. It’s a perfect diversion for this gray day in New York.
